Beachcomber 15 Tire and Rim size

Hi everybody,
we purchased last fall a 1974 Beachcomber 15. It came with 14" rims and car tires 175/75/R14.
We want to replace the worn out car tires and are running into trouble finding the right size.
My question is which rim and tire size did the Beachcomber 15 come with originally and next question can I run the trailer with car tires, since it weighs 1480 pounds?
We had bought new trailer rims and tires 205/75/14 (the smallest tire for a 14" rim) and we had less than 1" clearance on the inside of the wheel well.
Anybody have any suggestions?

Is that 1" between the side of the tire (sidewall) or tread and a body part?

1" from the side wall should be OK since there should be no risk of scrubbing.
