Talking Can I celebrate? (And a question on fridges)

my fridge works on propane!! woohoo

Last fall we bought the scamp, but haven't had time to check the propane line/fix it up until this weekend, which is FIX UP THE SCAMP weekend. We'd tried the fridge on AC, and it wouldn't cool. No battery yet/not even sure we will use it yet, so haven't tested that.

So SUPER excited that the old travl'r fridge in the 1979 scamp works. That's like a bonus as we assumed it didn't on purchase!! Plus it has a freeezer area unlike the cheaper modern ones and doesn't need the battery to run.

If anyone has any ideas why it won't work on AC, I'm all ears. But, for our style of calming, I'll take propane working!

Hi Jennifer,

What make and model of fridge is it? Check your heating element.

I know this is really obvious, but are you sure it's plugged in? The outlet is probably in the back, accessible from outside. Yours wouldn't be the first to have been unplugged...

The reason I ask is it seems odd that it will work on propane but not 110v AC.

While you're checking the plug, verify the outlet actually has power.

If all that checks out, then I agree with Larry- I'd suspect the heating element.

It is not unusual at all for any of these three way fridges to work on propane but not on either of the DC/AC.

It was plugged in. need to check that that plug is working, of course.

And if it's going to work on only one, I'll take the propane hands down!

If it works on propane, then getting it to work on electric should be fairly easy and inexpensive. You will likely want that so you can pre-cool the fridge at home for 12-24 hours before heading out without burning gas (assuming of course you are stocking it for the trip and not only at your destination).

And seeing the age of your trailer, I have to wonder if the gas side of your fridge is due for some cleaning and routine maintenance.

How do you know it didn't (doesn't) work on electric? How long did you leave it on electric before you determined it didn't work? Were you expecting it to make noises like your home refrigerator (it doesn't). Was the trailer level... I mean really level when you tried?

It's easy to tell if it works on propane due to being able to view the burner in action. The electric portion, only time will tell... and sometimes that's really, really slow.

We left it on about 3 days...no change. Trailer perfectly level at the fridge (surface level inside).

I think everything is due for some cleaning and maintenance! Is there anything special that needs done to the fridge propane parts?

The frig in my Scamp seems to be less sensitive to level on propane than AC power. When I run it on AC I have to be sure the trailer is very level.
