I find that after first removing tape (or the water repellent top layer of labels and stickers) a coating of vegetable oil left on overnight softens/loosens the glue substantially so it can be wiped off with a dry paper towel. You might have to do this a second time to get all the sticky off.

OK, I ordered a 300w heat gun, WD40, plastic scrapers, and Goo Gone. I will see what works.
