Yep, it grows fast in the SoCal climate. I was told that there's a lot of it there because the railroad companies grew it for use in RR ties --it grows quickly and the wood is dense and strong. Unfortunately, it also twists a lot as it dries, making it not as suitable for railroad ties as existing trees, so they gave up on that idea. But the eucalyptus remains.
It's also known as the IRS tree: "You clipped us."
