Fixing the roof

Hello everyone. I just got myself a 89 BF fifth wheel and the previous owner put tar on the roof for some reason. I have a small leak and need to add solar to the camper so I would like to remove the tar, but I don’t know what I should reseal the roof with after I get the tar off. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.
