For those who have access to the DIY channel on cable or satellite, this weeks episode of "Shipshape Boating" is all about gel coat repair. I watched it this evening (5/20/03) and it was very informative. This episode is #108 and will be repeated four times this holiday weekend. They also discuss waxing the gel coat.

DIY Channel is provided on most west coast cable outfits (I know it's there on COX in Orange County, Southern Cal.) as well as on Satellite Dishnet.

There's actually two episodes on gelcoating in the series,

I followed both links that were attached to your reply. I noticed both pages at the end of the links showed the same episode number which I then hyper-texted to. While I am not 100% sure, I do believe it is one episode with the "Getting Started" and the "Mixing and Applying the Gelcoat" listed as separate projects in the episode. I hope this is true because I could not find anywhere else on their schedule in the near future where another part of episode 108 was showing.

If you find out anything new, please post. I am interested in seeing all on this subject that I can.

I don't know -- could be one episode too.

I intend to watch the other episodes too. Seems like a lot would come in handy for Molded Fibreglass RV people. E.G. 'repacking trailer hub bearings' which is one I remember seeing listed.

But probably best left in the hands of a professional though.

Now that this show has aired, how did everyone find it?

Got any great tips to share with those of us who don't have cable TV? I know I'll have a lot of repairs to do on the gel coat, and I'm about as green as it gets. :r

Glad to do it since it suddenly became an important topic to me when a bungee cord end decided to attack my countertop, leaving a small crater. Oh woe is me Scamp!

Will probably be ordering the $33+/- gelcoat repair kit from West Marine or eBay.

Applying gelcoat successfully is really not for the novice with no experience with refinishing. if its just a small nick, you might want to give it a try, but matching the color is an art in itself. spraying gives the best result, but requires serious protective gear and really should only be tackled by a pro. i used gelcoat on the foredeck of my yacht and had a good result, but it is very difficult to work with. i would recommend an epoxy filler and marine paint for the inexperienced.
