Compact Jr.

:wave DK, I own a 72 Compact Jr. The expando top on mine is full length. The body of mine doesn't have what appears to be a tip-out
shelf on the outside and the the door opening is slightly different
but all and all very similar. They are rare and offer a really cool
alternative to the 10k dollar Burros etc. Orville

Hi, I'm Chuck H. and have a 1974 Hunter Compact II. At the last Oregon Gathering there were two Compact II's and two Compact Jr's and a Havas which looks like a cousin to them all. Check out Tom Trostel's photos of the 2007 gathering for photos.

Hello, We have a compact II . We just came back from camping in it. Ours is white with black trim. The inside is harvest gold.
We had one that we totaled in Montana. It was blue. Simular otherwise.
Our camper is fun.

I have a 1973 Compact II also. Mine is white on the upper 1/2 of the body, and a light green on the lower 1/2 of the body. I have BEAUTIFUL (haha) avacado green appliances! YAY! hehe Mine does need some freshening but overall it's a great rig for something over 30 yrs old!

My sister Cory has a Compact Jr; I'm the chief mechanic on it. She has the avocado green appliances, too--really gives away what decade it was built in!

She's been using it all summer and has been compiling a list of desirable improvements. My Christmas gift to her this last couple years has been to work on the trailer, so this winter season it'll be living at my house, with the sounds of hammering and drilling issuing from it.

Since we're all Compact folks here I'd like to ask, does anybody else get the feeling that our fiberglass skins are pretty darn thin? I mean, I can push on the skin of my rig from the outside and it flexes VERY easily! PLUS if the sun hits the right spot on the wall in the morning, on a section of the skin that doesn't have the quilted insulation, you can see the sunlight through the skin. Has anybody else noticed stuff like this too?
I just wonder cause I get the impression that some of the other FBRVs like Burros, UHauls, & such have a thick wall, or a double wall sort of set up, so do they have as much flex as we do, or sunshining through?
I also remember some other Compact owner talking about how when he was remodeling his unit he'd removed all the cupboards and such, and that his roof sagged until he put them back, that apparently our internal features like that (Cabinets, cupboards, etc) are doing double duty as structure/support as well.
Anyway, was just wondering if anybody else had noticed/thought about any of that...

Yes, even through the lining material I can see light in my Boler B1700. My lining has a different type of foam from the Ensolite in most Bolers (and early Scamps); they have a black rubber foam and thicker plastic skin over it, which likely blocks the light better. Fiberglass is naturally translucent, and apparently the gelcoat on the outside is not thick enough to completely block light.

I believe that this is common, and I'm sure the cabinets are significant to supporting the shell of my Boler B1700.

Has anybody tried to put brakes on one of these? Do you have to replace the axel or is there a flange for the brakes?

Dorothy,
My Compact Jr. does not have flanges on the axle. They could be welded on, but the best option would be to replace the axle.

Hello I have a Compact II which I am documenting my frameless restoration on another post. My completed interior removal has revealed some interesting features similar to others observations. The furniture definately holds up the roof which is a little heavier than a standard egg because of the pop up mechanism. The light does go through the uncovered walls within and without. I am having a good time with my resto. I am taking it slow and keeping it as simple as possible. I have not put brakes on my trailer yet but I did replace the axle which has the mounting flanges for brakes already on it so it will be just an add on. My current weight seems to be about 500 pounds so brakes are not a major concern yet, but will get official weight when finished. I have installed the wireing so it is ready for a future install.

PS Nice to have a thread for the compact group. Count me in.

Yaaaaaahoooooo!! I just became a Hunter Compact ll owner, and dont have a clue what I just bought!!! Its actually just what I was looking for, and then some. Im going to tow it with my 76 Scout Traveler that Im currently restoring, and I cannot wait. Its mostly camping ready, I paid 1500.00 for it. Im going to paint it to match the Scout ( Glow Orange w/olive trim). Same folks had it since the 80's, he passed on. So she decided to let it go. Any information you other Compact ll owners want to send my way, Id love it. Are there any get togethers? Mitch Johnson
