Loctite blue blues

After finding a screw from the window knob had fallen out and two others were lose, I decided to add a little loctite to the screw threads. The next day three of the four knobs failed. Only then did I take the time to read the loctite tube. Loctite and plastic don't get along. While I only used a small amount apparently there was enough loctite to reach the plastic as each screw was screwed in. Lesson learned. Raz

Sorry to read this, Raz. I ran into this once, we had an ABS plastic molded part fail exactly the same way on one of our projects. ABS is great otherwise, being pretty much indestructible mechanically. Hope replacement knobs are cheap (should be) and available. Otherwise you might have to improvise.

For awareness sake, DEET bug spray will do the same thing.

Deet

A bit more serious than a bit of plastic meltdown, Deet also impacts one's liver and immune system.

This is why even during 25 years of living and working in tropical jungles replete with all sorts of biting insects we chose NOT to use any.

Yep! I did get malaria 2 x, but cured quickly as opposed to life-long issues that may have been related to long-term use of the toxins.

At some campgrounds I worried about our Scamp's gel coat from the clouds of Deet and bug spray wafting around in huge clouds that were sprayed by city folks who area apparently scared poopless something might bite them and OH MY I am outside and uncomfortable

Sorry off original Loctite Blue topic.

Deet - In Vietnam we used it to remove paint. Our Deet was 100% and it made you feel really warm when you rubbed it on your skin.

Raz, Were men, we don't ask for directions or read directions on how to use stuff.

When I was in Alaska, we used some really strong Deet. Even knowing the risks, we slathered it on heavily.

There are 2 phases of Alaska mosquito attack if you do not have heavy duty protection.

Stage 1- You're afraid you are going to die. This stage
lasts no longer than 7 seconds.

Stage 2- You're afraid you are not going to die.

Hey Raz, thanks for the lesson in Locktite use. the old saying "knowledge gained is directly proportionate the amount of equipment ruined" seems to apply here. I learned a valuable lesson and didn't ruin anything!

DEET myths

Here's a blurb about DEET myths.

About Locktite. Many Locktite products contain either asitone or MEK, MEK is also used to weld plastics together. Thus it's a good idea to use the super glues and thread locker away from plastics including the most used plastic ABS.

Bruce could you provide the study information that DEET is bad. I'd like to know who did the study, their methodology, and how they came to the results you're reporting.
Thanks.

I cant seem to find this post but thought I would mention that I know someone who has chronic Lynne disease and let me tell you, I would risk the effects of deet to keep the ticks off me any day of the week, esp. since I understand deet to be proven pretty safe.

The one thing that can be said for Deet and not for the so called
" NATURAL " alternatives is that it works . My son has suffered with the effects of lymes 's disease for many years , which is far more harmful than the occasional use of Deet. IMHO. If you believe the Internet , everything we , use ,eat ,drink , breathe , smell is toxic.

There are indications that lack of Deet use can be linked to feelings of paranoia...

Thanks, Raz, for posting the ill effects of Loctite and the plastic knobs. Now, if I can just remember this!
