New axle for my 13ScampDeluxe.

I just got home from Backus.

Scamp has always had a policy of constant improvement and this year has been no different.
Starting this year the Scamp13 has a axle with 10" brakes.
This is something I have wanted to do for some time.

While my old 22° up axle with 7" brakes has served us well I decided it was time for the change, so we made the trip to Backus to have the new axle installed.
For me, the trip was more like visiting friends or family than just a factory for work to be done.

My appointment was for 9:30AM.
We arrived at 8:45 , unhooked the trailer by the weldshop and they took it it in around 9:00.

By noon we had a beautiful new axle installed and ready to roll.
It looks GREAT and performs beautifully and it is now a bolt-on

We now have to step up a little more, but we no longer worry over every bump and driveway. The extra clearance is just the right amount to protect all the plumbing and the underside of the trailer.
Also It allows me to use a reasonable drawbar drop without tying the chains up, plus it looks great behind my new truck which is a bit on the tall side.

I want to thank all the folks a Scamp for their dedication to making the finest quality trailers and for treating people as they would want to be treated.
Also for the prompt, professional, and quality service that we have always experienced from them.

Now to adjust the bearings and the brakes a bit and rustproof the brackets...Its like a new trailer all over again!

That's great.

I remember getting my new axle, though it was only a couple months after buying the trailer. I remember the way it sat before was much more "cozy", but the 4" of clearance the new axle gave me was definitely needed.

If you get a chance I would love to see a picture of your trailer with the new axle! I am happy that this new axle is now available!

Although the original axle was 15YO and well over 70,000 miles, it was still functionally sound and did not cause excessive tire wear.
I have wanted a little more axle clearance to protect all the plumbing stuff underneath. With the new truck I wanted more coupler height as well.
When I heard that Scamp now provided 0° axles and 10" brakes, I decided it was the right thing at the right time for me.
Here are befores (first 2)and afters (second2)...

Do you mind sharing what the cost was for the axle change?

You would need to call Jerrod at Scamp since each quote is only an estimate. Phone: (218) 947-4932

My axle with 10" brakes was $499 plus installation... which will vary based on the time required for the installation, probably around $300 more or less, which should include installed bolt-on brackets.

If you already have the bolt on brackets it could be less maybe.

Sales tax applies to the entire purchase.

With an appointment, it is professionally done same day in a few hours.
If you call... please tell Jerrod I sent you.

While Floyd may be overzealous in his frequent praise (or defense), perhaps even profuse glorification of a certain trailer manufacturer, he really doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. So I am more than confident he is NOT giving anyone the finger. From my experience, he is way more into giving or providing help to others. So in reference to the photograph in question, I would chalk the visible digit up to poor hand placement on the cell phone or camera! Gotta watch where you put those hands!

Congrats, Floyd, on getting it accomplished. Glad you finally got the 10-inch brakes and the added lift. From several of our conversations over the years I know this was a mod you really wanted for “Eggy Sue.”

Looks great Floyd. How many inches of height did the new axle provide?

Yeah, I was just kidding. But it is more likely to be A finger, than a thumb.

Having Scamp do the work certainly makes sense. The cost and time involved seem very reasonable. Plus, we have proof he didn't get his fingers dirty in the process. Good job.

Actually, I would have done it myself except for two main reasons...

1] We had a trip planned to visit friends and also planned a tourist trip on the way (House on the Rock).
2] Shipping would have been more than the originally quoted installation price.

Plus what you said!

(and I got my first trip with the new truck)

How'd the new chariot work out compared to the old Ranger?

Floyd,
I have so little opportunity to tease you about any of your fine posts, that I have to go for it when the chance arrives. And the problem of fingers over the lens, is a constant battle for me. Just makes me laugh, 'cause it hits home.

My 2001 Ranger was a great truck and thoroughly modern in its time.
I loved driving it and it did a great job towing my Scamp.
Time has passed, and this new Ranger makes my 2001 seem like an antique, a competent antique, but an antique none the less!
On the old truck, every improvement required a compromise ...
Ride Vs Handling, Payload Vs Comfort, etc.
I was very happy with it for 18+ years.

Here is a post which I wrote for another site.....

I just got back from a 1200 mile trip towing my Scamp13D,
Trailer 2000 pounds,
Payload +- 800 pounds.
Average highway speed 63MPH
(STX Supercab 2WD)

HOLY CRAP!! This truck is AMAZING!

I am virtually speechless, but I will try...
1] Comfort.
Excellent for both driver and passenger.
Driver position proved easily adjustable for all day comfort.
Controls proved easily accessible and quickly responsive.
Quiet even in traffic or high winds and rain.

2]Performance...
Acceleration was as if the truck was empty with no trailer.
Stability was absolute in all conditions.
Cruise control never moved from the setting, even in high winds or steep hills.
Creeping in inner-city traffic was smooth.
Passing at highway speeds was smooth strong and quiet.
Brakes were smooth and perfectly responsive in all conditions.

3]Handling...
Precise and predictable in all conditions from winding roads to pouring rain.
Speed seemed to have no effect on handling.
Apexing an unexpected curve felt like an IT car on track.
Emergency lane changes or nearly missed turns felt routine.
Backing the trailer was precise and direct.
This trip encountered some of the worst traffic and weather conditions,
and I never even had a single white knuckle moment.

4] Visibility...
Visibility was great all around no blind surprises from passing , cross, or oncoming traffic
Backing the trailer was clear down both sides and in the camera.

5] Efficiency...
Low to mid-twenties on first tier fuel with no real evidence of octane making any difference.

I could hardly notice the transmission shift, except for the tach and activating gear graphic.

My only minor complaint was that the bare skin of my forearms and elbows became uncomfortable resting on the vinyl of the armrests on the console and the door.
I laid a T-shirt rag down and solved the problem completely,
I expect to wear sleeves on future long trips.
