Next time you replace a rivet....

Would someone who is handy with a video camera, tape the process of removing a rivet from a castia and replacing it? I know it isn't the best time of year for this kind of project but i can't see where there is anything online or you tube about this. We may just get brave in the mean time but just a thought. Maybe it could be a sticky with a link since there are lots of people scared of this process and it could ease some minds and possibly inspire more people to do this themselves... just a thought.

Yes Chuck, but it could be that i don't know what i am doing. I searched replacing rivets video and all i got was talk about possibly doing one. I am on Casita forum, and Casita club but am more active in this one just because when i was looking for a fiberglass camper it was so interesting to see what else was out there. Love them all though. I know it's got to be out there somewhere.

if its a poprivet, you simply drill the head and it should push right out.

if its a hand rivet, the sort you pean over with a hammer, you simply drill the head and it should push out.

if the rivet spins while drilling, use the drill on an angle sometimes works.

I found several YouTube videos on removing rivets before replacing broken latch on an awning. There are several ways to do it, but this worked for me:

Use a center punch to create a small indentation in the middle of the rivet so the drill will not walk around.

Start drilling with a sharp (new) drill bit a bit smaller than the rivet itself. Periodically check to see the surrounding parts are ok, and try to knock, or wrestle otherwise persuade the erstwhile rivet it must depart.

After drilling, sometimes a punch or the center punch will knock it out. Other times a chisel is needed to cu the head off. All depends on the location and parts affected.

It's really pretty simple, it just takes determination, a level head and a steady hand. Your pocketbook will thank you when the repair is finished!

Well, i found a leaking rivet today. So I know which one will be first. This is the first good rain we have had since we bought it. I was surprised there weren't more leaking. I got 2 sets of rivets and the caps and snaps. As soon as my husband is feeling brave i will let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the advice.

Just curious.

I had no leaks in there at all after I sealed the roof fan up and that was 2 years ago.

There are however many of the snap caps that can be redone for sure.

It really is a simple process you just need to try to keep the rivet gun steady as you squeeze to get it to seat the rivet as flat as possible.

I think the idea of practicing first on any 2 parts of scrap is a great idea as you should be able to develop a good feel for it quickly.

Ed, Dave took the acorn nut off of one of the roof ones by the microwave. It is just inside to the left when you first come in. It had just rained all day and so i was just touching each one and around the windows to see if anything needed some sealing up and there was a little water coming in around it. Maybe taking the nut off it loosened it and broke a seal? Anyway we do have a few to replace so if it is decent we will maybe get started on that soon.
