Packing Wheels With Grease from a Newbie

Hello,

I got my 2007 13' Scamp less than 2 months ago and have gone on one short trip with the kids and have 2 short trips planned for the next few weeks. It's just my kids I using the Scamp as hubby doesn't like camping. My question is this : I just came across an article about packing the wheels with grease and I remember the previous owner saying it needed to be done soon. I've tried looking through the threads and it seems most people do this themselves. Neither my husband nor I are handy. At. All. Where can I take the Scamp to have this done ? I'm supposed to be taking off on a one hour drive in two weeks and now I'm scared. Help please !

Julie any RV repair shop should be able to do it for you in a hour or two, its a basic maintenance item that should be done yearly on all RV's.

Thank you !

@Kevin, I have seen that article and pic you posted and it's a foreign language to me. Easy for you to say. Haha !

Is it something that needs to be done even if you haven't really put any miles on it ?

If the previous owner indicated it was due to be done then I would do it as you dont know how long its been since he did it or how many miles he put on it since last done ....

Thanks Carol ! I do know he made three round trips from Phoenix to Minnesota. I am going to have it done whether it needs it or not so I'll have peace of mind.

Thanks again.

Nothing ruins a fun trip like losing a wheel bearing, so better to do it and be sure you are ready to go. Any independent auto place should also do it for you. The process is identical to what has been done on cars for decades.

If you decide to do it yourself, you can use grease in a baggie to keep your hands clean or wear rubber gloves.

Trailers that sit get condensation in the bearings, so it is not done by mileage alone.

Make sure you phone around to different RV places - the prices vary greatly! but IMHO it should be no more than $100 - also be warned that they will take a good look at the bearings and if they think they need replacing that will add to the bill...... bearings that have been well cared for should not need replacing to often though.

Cool. It's a chance to get your hands really, really greasy and keep a bunch of money in your pocket. $5 worth of grease, a few more bucks for seals and you are good to go! Nothing quite like learning the ropes (maintenance) with some "sweat equity" blended with "pride in ownership." Honestly, none of us are born with the "maintenance gene," but egg ownership... we aquire it... proudly

Stay away from RV shops unless your rich.
Any tire shop, brake shop or auto mechanic can pack them for you.

I packed bearings for the first time ever last year. I would like to avoid having to do over and over. Anyone know anything about bearing buddies?

yes by all means learn every bit of maint. yourself.
make it part of your spring, :" getting it ready" ritual.

that one might have bearing buddies on it. if not have them put on, much easier to care for it that way.

they basicly replace the little metal cap on the end of the hub, they have a grease fitting in them so you can just give a couple pumps og grease on each side and your done.
still everything should be inspected once in awhile.

I think that is a good idea. While greasing your bearings is a strait forward procedure, it needs to be done properly. It's also a good time to check the condition of the brakes, set them if required, and check the pressure and condition of the tires. A small shop should let you watch so you can see how it's done. Good luck, Raz

Your post headline suggests that you're going to find a newbie, make grease out of him (or her) and use it to pack your wheel bearings. How do you do that? (Tongue in cheek.)

The problem with bearing buddies is it only greases the front race... not the rear. Bearing Buddies are NOT the same as Dexter E-Z lubes. Here's a good video demonstration for repacking trailer hub bearings: Repack Trailer Hub Bearings Demonstration Video | etrailer.com

I believe that the main function of a bearing buddy is to keep a slight pressure inside the hub to prevent water intrustion when a boat trailer is backed under water.
