pre-trip check: axle/wheels/bearings/tires

So far, we have used our Scamp 16 deluxe only for weekend trips within a few hours of home, but we're gearing up for our first longer trip, from VA to ME & NB. I am thinking about safety and wondering if we should do any particular checks before leaving. In particular, I'm not sure how to check the axle & bearings, and I wouldn't know what to look for if I could. Can anyone give me some hints, or links (ideally with pics)?

Tom, I think you need to give us a little more info. (Especially since the trailer stuff is missing from your profile these days.) Did you buy your Scamp new? If it was used, do you know the last time the bearings were inspected and repacked? It's usually an every year or 12k miles thing.
