Refrigerator freezing foods

I have an older (2003) dometic refrigerator that is freezing foods in the fridge compartment even when the thermostat dial is set on number 2. The location of the thermister is not adjustable. It is held in place within the fins behind a thin aluminum panel with two screws. ( Photo orientation is off. Left side of foto is top of fridge, right side is bottom, wirebis thermister) I think this is part of the original design for this model as there is no option for changing the location in the operation manual.

I'm assuming it may be a resistance problem in the thermister, but do not know how to check for this. Also it looks as if I'd have to pull the fridge to replace the thermister which is beyond my DIY skills.

Any suggestions regarding the thermister.

The freezer door is operational, no leaks.

Anything else that I should check that might be causing the problem?

Scott

Assuming the wire is long enough, the thermister can be located by pulling the two screws and using double stick foam tape on the wall rather than the aluminum fins. However, this is usually done when the refrigerator is NOT getting cold enough so the thermister is moved to a “warmer” location to “trick” the refrigerator controls into providing more cold. The fins are typically colder than the plastic wall, so relocation of the thermister is unlikely to solve your problem. If you lack DIY skills, you might want to get professional help from a fixed or a mobile RV repair technician.

Well I would wonder if there is a broken wire or a bad connection. My first step would be to track the wire to where to connects. I would make sure it is connected. I also would look really careful at the thermistor for damage. Then I would disconnect the two wires where they connect and hook them up to a multi-meter. Then I would measure the resistance. It absolutely should not be either a short or an open. It should have a value. Then I would change the temp of the thermistor and see if the resistance changes. If this part is the issue then that should tell you the problem. I am betting on it being a short or open.

But you are saying you are not handy. So you may need to find/hire someone to take care of this for you

Wow, Most of the people on here would love for their refrigerator to get that cold. Does it freeze everything in the fridge or just at the top? Do you have a small battery operated fan in the refrigerator area to make it circulate the air all the way to the bottom of the fridge? If you don't, that may solve your problem.

Here is a link so you can see what I am talking about. Not a fan of CW but just to show you what to look for, they are battery operated.

Actually mine used to have a freezer, but I had to replace the unit and the new one does not. BUT I did find out that it can be made into a freezer even in very hot weather. (Yeah set it wrong ;-) ) Remember that these things have two thermostats. AND they are like computers. They are both like a 2 year old who is being well behaved. They will do what you told them, not necessarily what you wanted them to. Had one of the thermostats set right, but then forgot to check the other one and the propane side was set to full max cold.
