scamp battery wiring?

I took the battery out of my scamp, and didn't think much of it. black-ground, white-hot, just like everything else, right? I was going to put it in today, and noticed there was a fuse holder scabbed in to the black wire. Is black actually hot, and scamp did another backwards thing? I didn't take time to ring out the wires, it was getting dark.

Standard custom for most DC wiring, at least in RV's, is Black (or Red) is (+) and White is (-). But check out the where the wires go before reconecting.

Yep. In my scamp the black and or red is hot. However YMMV.

well, that makes sense then (kind of). Must be an rv thing. God forbid we stick to a common theme across the board.

Thanks guys! I bought a new battery box and 30 amp blade fuse holder to replace the crap stuck on there now, but I can't find any heatshrink with adhesive in town.

Black being hot and white being neutral are very common wiring colors, not only in the RV industry, but also with AC house wiring.

To get heat shrink with adhesive, you might check out this site.

Sealed Connectors for Multiple Wires

They have all kinds of electrical stuff at very reasonable prices.

Though some other colors have changed for trailer wiring, white as ground remains the standard, as it has been for many years:

And for those who might be unaware:

There's a Scamp wiring diagram at the following link right here in the document center! Fiberglass RV - Document Center - WiringDiagram_Scamp

Thanks spanke, I'll check those connectors out. I knew it was common for ac, but with dc on autos and aircraft, black is the ground, so I made an assumption…you know what they say about that.

Thanks for the link, Francesca!

Just to be clear...white in house wiring (ac) is neutral...bare or green wire is ground.

Guess how I know this...

Oops. Yeah, I knew that part. I'm just glad there was a fuse scabbed in there, otherwise I wouldn't have thought twice about hooking the scamp up wrong. It was one of those "Why would they put a fuse in the ground wire? Heyyy, wait a minute..."

Cars...red hot, black ground. Plane, white hot, black ground. RV..white ground, black hot. One would think they would standardize that...

If you had connected it backwards trust me when I tell you that you would not have been the first one here by a longggggggg shot to do that!

Standards? Why make it any easier than possible. I love the bolt sizes for the old plumbing stuff. Totally 2 or 3 64ths off so you could not possibly use anything but Plumbing tools.
