Actually, I already have a Second Chance ... truth be told, I have a new one and an old one.

The old one doesn't do me any good, because both my gas grills and my trailer now have the new twist on fittings ... instead of using the oh-where-is-a-wrench-I-have-to-change-gas-bottles fitting.

Marshall Brass (who, by the way, makes a lot of stuff I own!) ... recently introduced a new Second Chance.

What's a Second Chance?

Well, it allows you to quickly attach a disposible propane gas bottle to your gas line when your big propane cylinder runs out of gas.

And, if your experience is like mine, the big gas cylinder runs out of gas at the most inopportune time ... like in the middle of grilling a steak, boiling a lobster or taking a shower.

With a Second Chance and a disposible propane bottle, yes ... you have a Second Chance to finish whatever you were doing when you ran out of propane gas.

The new Second Chance ... sold at Camping World on line and other places ... accomodates both type of connection fittings ... old-style-using-a-wrench-to-screw-in ... and the new twist on fittings.

And now you know why I need a Second Chance (yes, that's what it's called!).

This morning I decided to check out my propane system after taking my TT out for a rather vigorous bounce test the other day. Needed to check to see if some of the repairs I made would hold (yes, thank you very much, they did). As I was lighting the pilot on my fridge, I was wondering about checking the hot water heater and decided that since I had drained the system, I wouldn't refill it just to test it. Besides, if I go winter camping, I can just heat the water if needed. Which made me think of the Second Chance. (Okay, so I have a weird thought process, but that's the truth).
What if I were out of propane and needed some hot water? or had stuff in the fridge? Yep, I think I need a Second Chance...in fact, I'll take all the chances I can get.

I carry a differently named Second Chance and two one lb bottles in the back of my truck instead of a second propane tank, just bungee the cannister down next to the bigger bottle (10 lber in my case).

Really made out a while back when a tent camper had an almost full one lber that had a leaky valve when off her stove, so she gave it to me and I burned it off in normal use rather than let it leak out to the atmosphere. Having only a furnace and range (no refrig), one of those little cannisters lasts me a long time.

:cblob Boy am I glad to hear about this. Alan and I were talking the other day wishing that we could use a disposable propane canister instead of the tank provided. The only item in our casita that runs on propane is the stove top. We haven't even used it and probably never will. We use the microwave.

We want to buy a generator and mount it on the tongue where the propane tank is now located.

Do you put the 1 lb out on the tongue with the second chance or do you modify the system and use it inside somehow?

I would NEVER put a propane bottle (big or small) in a TT.This could lead to an explosive situation in a small confined area. I have seen propane bottles explode due to bad and faulty misuse.When you have seen end result YOU will agree with me.:sad

We've used a "second chance" for years on all the trailers we've owned. It screws into the fitting on the tongue that goes on the full size tank. We often take the big tank off to use outside with the stove and BBQ and hook up the little tank to the trailer in case we need the stove for heat.

We got ours at ours local propane dealer. Also works on your tank at home in case it quits in the middle of cooking your dinner. But then that never happens does it HaHa :bh and especially not when you've got company!!!!:red

As others have said ... I'd come up with some sort of way to fasten the disposable propane bottle on the outside of the rig and use the trailer's original gas connections ... that way you wouldn't have to cut or alter the original setup ...

I just bought some neat velcro wire strips that are 15 inches (38 cm) at Menards, one of those large home improvement stores. The strip were in the electrical department and came in assorted sizes and lengths. The 15 inch strips came in a three-pack, and it was all I could do to get the three strips apart from each other. I would think that a couple of these would strap a bottle securely to trailer a-frame somewhere.

I'd also use something else ... as a double-safe ... to make sure the bottle rides ok.

Nancy ... new trailers and new bbqs come with the new connections, which is why I had to get a new Second Chance.

And yes, why is it the bbq grill never runs out of propane unless you have company for dinner? One of life's little mysteries I guess!

OH!! you were talking BBQ grill. I thought your BIG tank ran out, you went out side and stuck that itty bitty one there in place. what a picture. I thought doesn't she know those things have a guage on them. your suppose to go check them every once in a while. especially if there is a BIG snow storm coming. :winter or company

In a perfect world, yes .... in my world, despite my best efforts, the big propane cannisters will run out at the most inopportune time.

I carry a 10 pound (4.5 kg) propane bottle for our portable bbq grill.

I remember one time (before I had a Second Chance), up in Nova Scotia, we bought 4 "market" lobsters and brought them back to the campsite to cook 'em.

As soon as I fired up the grill, the bottle went "pooffth" and flamed out. I then took off one of the RV's large propane bottles to use, but it too "pooffth" out shortly after lighting ... leaving me with a hard choice ... remove the last propane bottle from the trailer (which would unpressurize the rig's propane lines) or eat raw lobster.

No, the lobster pot was too large to fit inside on the stove, so I removed the last propane bottle and hooked it up to the bbq.

The lobster was great! Fresh off the boat ... well, it even would have been fresher had I not spent 30 minutes changing gas bottles.

We know carry a Second chance and a supply of disposable propane bottles ... which makes it soooooo much easier.

I was excited to see the new Second Chance with the new propane fittings.

Now that I can understand,Charles. but I was thinking 500 gal, outside the house. changes the whole picture doesn't it. I guess I've never run out of camping propane where it mattered. Don't camp much in the winter, burr, :snowman but I have run out of house propane. That I do not like. :nope

We're still working with a 20 year old BBQ. It was my dad's and he used it about 10 times...not big on barbequeing...so when our last BBQ bit the dust he gave his to us. Soooo our second chance still works.

Not everyone has a guage on their propane tanks. We now have three and not one with a guage and what the heck does having a empty propane tank on your BBQ have to do with a snow storm.

Wait, I got to get up off the floor. :colors Not laughing at you, but me. I'm just not as trailer oriented as most of you. I was thinking of when we ran out in the house/home/cedar/brick and stone house.
That big sucker I've got in the yard has a guage. the little big one on the trailer doesn't. I just got this all messed up. :red

In my case, I DO dash outside :cblob and put the little canister online in place of my (relatively) big bottle (only a ten lb'r), but I don't have a refrigerator, just a ventfree furnace and the range top. Dashing outside in cold, rain or whatever tends to make an impression on me so I won't forget to refill the big bottle:zz

My outside stoves are a Coleman one-burner and a couple of backpacking stoves, all using Coleman fuel.

Charles, for a cannister holder, consider a short length of PVC or drain pipe long enuf for a couple of cannisters to stand up inside (leave bottom open so leakage can fall right out, but not the cannisters, of course). This would put the cannisters outside, where they are safest, but out of direct sunlight. I'm thinking of doing this myself to get the cannisters out of the back of the truck.

:ola All of your resoponses gave me an idea. One day, I'll get rid of the big propane bottle and that will give me room to make a box of expanded metal for a generator and then attach one of Petes Pvc holders to the box and have disposable propane bottles mounted on the tougue.

Well, I'd laugh if there was anything to laugh at, but that picture is great. I'm always doing stuff like that. helps me think. just one problem, MaryM. where are the lables. I'm not sure I know which is which. Let's see if I can guess. 1st on left = generator
middle = battery right = propane tubes??? am I right?
The other thing. would the propane be hooked up all the time while in those tubes or do you have to take them out to hook them up?
