Thought I'd Pass along a tip thatr came from our canoe club to all those who cartop a canoe or other equipment. Take about 16 inches of nylon strap, remove a fender bolt add a fenderwasher and reinsert. Aim the loop slightly inward and when not in use is out of sight. No more ropes across the paintwork.
It'll work for almost any type of vehicle.

James, could you please post some more pictures? It's not clear where the strap is attached (maybe under the hood close to the windshield?). Also, what do you use for attachment points at the rear of the vehicle?

Thanks,

Dale

It often helps to twist the nylon strapping on each side -- Otherwise, at some speeds, the flat strapping starts to vibrate in the wind, using the canoe as a sounding board -- Used to make my dog howl when the aluminum canoe started moaning

I guess that position for the attachment will depend on the make of vehicle, but it should be as far forward as possible. The wide spread of the ropes make it very stable and very little movement of the canoe in big wind. With the pickup I made a "T" shaped pipe support which screws to the bumper. If the straps sing then maybee their too long. Here's a shot of the front corner of the truck.

Wouldn't that vibrate while driving and wear away the paint?

None of us has had a problem since adopting this system about two years ago. No more ropes over the front and no more foem padding required. There is actually only about 1/4 inch of webbing touching the vehicle just where it protrudes from under the hood. As a group we are all impressed with this method Shorter ropes means less sway in a cross wind.

What a great idea, I've been using strong shoe laces for loops but this idea rocks!
