Uhaul door hinges

Was Paging through the UHaul Ebay store and found these: part number is the same as in UHaul manual should be good for 84&85 production. Price is good. I just spent about $40 each with a discount to get 2 new ones. granted they were SS. hope the link works if not just go to UHaul ebay store and search for part 21822003

Great find! I've noticed that prices are different between their eBay store and their regular on line sales, so it makes sense to check both.

Yea, I'm amazed that they sold 19 of them. There must be more UHauls out there than we realize. I checked that part number at the UHaul on-line truck and trailer parts site and it doesn't come up, so this must have been a one off find. I believe that someone found another source for this hinge as I recall for ice boxes.

If you look in the Uhaul repair manual I believe it shows that at one time there were replacement hinges that had a slightly different mounting hole placement. I have a set of used hinges from a VT that have the holes locations different than my originals.

I've noticed that my attachment screws come loose every now and then on my VT hinges. I've tightened them up each time, but I'm finding that the wood core of the door seems to be deteriorating around the screws. Has anyone found a better way to attach the hinges to the door? Should I go with bolts and nuts rather than screws? Anyone done this?

On my VT there are only 2 screws for each hinge rest are bolts. My top hinge had issues with the screws so I used SS 8-32 bolts (I believe) drilled through. Uses SS washer and loctite trimmed bolt to top of nut with dermal tool and cut off wheel. Other bolts were replaced with SS bolts washers and nylon lock nuts. Bottom screws were upgraded to #10 same length. May need to squirt some thin epoxy wood filler in holes to strengthen

Seems to be a similar problem running in this thread simultaneously. http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...r-55916-2.html Francesca had good recommendations that I repeated a bit (was multi tasking/skimming rather than reading).

Amazing!

' Expect the unexpected ' appears to be the rule regarding obselete UHaul
CT or VT parts. These hinges went fast but those yet to be revealed tail
light lenses are sure to go even faster!

My burro had that problem. I opened it up from the inside and inserted thick aluminum plates - drilled through and bolted the body part of the hinge the door then drilled, threaded and screwed into the door aluminum insert. It seems to be holding up really well. The epoxy solution would be much simpler if you can make that work!

I found a black strap hinge at Harbor Freight that worked great on my U Haul 13 ft.
for $2.95. I bolted and screwed it on. Works great.

Are you concerned with potential rust staining problems

They are painted and I used stainless steel screws and bolts. I have many holes in the outer skin of my Uhaul. The previous owner drilled them when attaching ceiling molding. What is the best way to fill those? Especially the ones I can't reach from the inside. Andy

boy that's a bummer. since it is on top I would go with a good white urethane caulk that metal roofers use, no silicone seal. also would kinda squirt it in the hole and strike off smooth with a caulk tool, need to leave a little for strength around the hoe to prevent it from dropping down. if it does then just add some more. you can sit on the roof if you don't weigh too much(+200) which will make it easier
