Vintage Scamp Door Window Rebuild

Hi all,

When I last worked on my '78 Scamp door window project, I dismantled, cleaned and partly reassembled the window/frame. I also, thank goodness, purchased replacement gaskets.

Now I can't find the pictures I took while taking it apart and am wondering where to turn to find, hopefully, a step by step tutorial or document that can sort of hold my hand as I get this thing together and back where it belongs.

Chuckles and advice welcome.

Here's a more specific question about window rebuild.

Ok, I'm going to start with my door window rebuild by caulking the glass to the frame, perhaps placing the new gasket around the window opening at the same time.

Does anyone have a recommendation for type of caulk? Should I just use house, outdoor silicone caulk that I have on hand?

First, (and I know a lot of trailer and RV manufacturers use Silicone sealants because they're cheaper than quality sealants,) I hate them, and avoid them like the plague. Once applied, you will not have a good seal after a couple of years, and nothing else will stick where it was used, ironically, not even more Silicon sealant. My preferred sealants are 3M 4200 or Sika-Flex.

And I would also recommend removing the window and applying the sealant between the window and the trailer shell. Just squeezing a bead of any sealant around the outer edges is a disaster waiting to happen.

For mounting windows, my choice is Butyl Rubber weather stripping, (available at any auto parts store.

Butyl tape is also available at RV parts suppliers, but compare costs, making sure each item is the same from each source. Auto parts store might be cheaper, but could be less quality product, so compare & be aware.
