weight difference between scamp and casita

Hi Everyone

Been browsing ebay and noticed a few 16ft trailers listed. The scamps listed between 1600 and 2000 lbs depending if it had a bathroom. The casitas were always over 3000lbs

I mean they are both a fiberglass shell and themore expensive scamp had a bathroom as well but still 1000lbs lighter

any thoughts??

There certainly are differences between Casita and Scamp, but I doubt if it would amount to that much weight difference for a 16 footer. The weight of a loaded trailer on a scale is more important than what someone says or thinks one weighs. Both would require a 3500# class III hitch and more than 2000# rated towing capacity. A 13 footer can be pulled with a 2000# hitch.

Thanks for the info. What is the weight of yours without filling the water tanks. Would it be able to be towed with a dodge caravan. My tow capacity is 3600lbs

Our 1999 Scamp 16' with package including side bath, a/c, furnace, no awning, without water in the tanks weighs about 2800 lbs. loaded for travel. We towed it with a Plymouth Grand Voyager minivan with a tow package until we had to replace the transmission and then we got a 2002 Tundra V8.

was your grand carvan a 3.3 liter or 3.8. Do you attribute your transmission failure to towing the trailer

It is a 3.3 and we do attribute the failure partially to towing...but they are notorious for transmission failure which we thought had been resolved when we purchased the van new. The tow rating was 3500 lbs. and we towed a Coleman tent trailer which weighed about 1800 lbs. for five years before we got the Scamp. We towed the Scamp less than 500 miles when the transmission failed, fortunately at home and not on a trip.

Chrysler has NEVER resolved the problem with their transmissions.
You would think they would be interested in doing so after all these years.

Chevy also has failed to stand behind their product 2 x ( under warranty)

Ford, well they are just Ford, smug and non responsive.

Sorry to say my next tow will be Japanese.

My guess is that the Casita weights are Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (max allowed), not actual trailer weight. Casita's web page for the 16ft shows dry weights under 2100 lb, but an axle capacity of 3500 lb.

A 1600 lb Scamp 16', on the other hand, must be bare-bones and dry; even the Scamp specs say it is at least 1750 lb dry with no options. Also, some owners list the axle weight as if it is the whole trailer weight, ignoring the hitch weight component, which is at least a couple hundred pounds in this size of trailer.

I assume that Bob meant a Class II hitch, which is the class with a 3500 lb maximum capacity; I agree that step up in size from 13' to 16' usually means crossing the Class I towing limit. My Sienna has a Class II hitch, which I use to pull my 17' Boler.

You are correct. Didn't get my classes straight. 3500 would be class II.

A loaded Casita 17 with full tanks and all options could weigh over 3500#, if not careful. The axle rating is 3500# and the tire rating is 1760 X 2 = 3520#. I've never weighed mine, but have no awning, microwave or TV. I usually travel light; one person, one dog and most of the heavy stuff goes in the tug.

I agree Pjanits--My wife and i got a new tow in Dec.Its a 2007 Toyoto Rave 4.Tow rating 3500lbs ---V6 4x4 auto.At preasent time 28 miles per Canadian Gal.We are very plesed with it.
