Unless you're set on keeping the unit original, I would suggest upgrading to LED tail lights. There are a number of new options available that should connect directly into the existing wiring.
I went with 7-inch round, submersible lights from Amazon. They're tough, waterproof, and bright. No cutting was needed to install them since I was replacing surface-mount lights. They also come with a rubber backing that seals pretty well on my Scamp.
