12 Volt Fridge

I'm looking to swap out the ice box in a 73 Trillium and replacing it with a small Fridge, probably a 45 or 65 litre. I am looking at the Bodega brand. Any comments or suggestions on alternatives.

I've got 2 12v coolers that I bought when we tent camped. I still use them now with my Casita. I like them because they are very energy efficient and easy to move around. One of them has a divider so you can either have both sides the same, or have one side as a fridge the other as a freezer.

Fridge vs cooler

Thanks for the response Troy. What brand are your coolers?

Casita fridge

My 2013 Casita fridge took 3 or 4 days to begin cooling. So, I removed it and use the space for storage. I now use a Bourgerv (59 qt, I believe) frig/freezer. It’s portable and runs on 12 volts. Since I am semi permanently boondocking, I installed a 100 watt solar panel to keep the. Bourge charged. Keeps me from using all my propane waiting for the Dometic to cool. I love the Bourge. It has been flawless. Quick to cool/freeze and very good at maintaining the temperature.

I don't want to take sides over brands, just saying I have used a chest style Engle for at least 10 yrs and recently a front loading model. They run on 12V at 2.3Amp draw and cool down very quickly. Never any kind of problem.

The front loader replaced a 3 way Dometic. If I were to make that change again I would probably use the chest type and build some kind of storage into the old Dometic's space. Why ? Because it was a lot of labor getting the front loader fitted and fastened in place.

regards, Hugh

12V fridge

I put a NovaKool R3800 in my 76 Trillium. You could go smaller. I removed the drawer above the fridge opening to fit, added a little bit of trim around and it works and looks great. I run it off my solar and a 200ha battery.

I also use a Bouge RV - 30 quart cooler. I have had no issues with it at all. Very thrifty on power - I leave it plugged into the Pathfinder at all times. It can run over night without draining the car battery. Have a 75 watt solar panel when we are parked for more than a day. Left the ice box in the Boler (1972) and use it for canned drinks etc mainly.
