1978 Boler 1700 Restoration

Hi!

I purchased a 1978 Boler 1700 and have just completed gutting it this weekend. It’s in very rough shape and we are working on the fiberglass repairs this week. We are in need of lots of different parts and advice so I thought this thread would be helpful. I will post photos soon!

Hello and welcome!

I’ve got a 17’ Boler as well. We’ve had a few good years in it, but it’s due for some renovations soon.

I found some posts and YouTube videos by Kevin Johnston (a member of this forum) that we’re absolutely excellent. My only complaint is that when he got to the part about replacing the ensolite, he didn’t finish that segment . I’m not sure he’s posted anything else in the last several years, so I’ll be on my own when I get to that stage.

In any case, this forum is excellent if you need ideas, advice and encouragement.

Good luck!

Welcome to the club I have a 17' Boler as well which I bought completely gutted, with none of the original parts so it is a blank canvas. Post pic so everyone can share in your misery..I mean fun.

Here are some shots of what we are working on.

We have to pull out all of the insulation to repair the fiberglass shell. There are lots of holes, and cracks throughout the trailer and lots of moisture damage. We also have some major work to do the floor. Its very weak in parts.

Ive looked at a couple 17s and decided to stick with our 13.
An observation I made of the ones I seen was the bodies were sagging.
I would be very concerned about leaving those trailers sitting with
nothing supporting the roof.
Ensure the body is where it should be before fitting any inner permanent supports.
I would consider glassing the supports to the body as well, I don't think a few screws would be enough.

sagging body

I agree with Fred's comment. We bought a 1700 three and a half years ago. We did not need to gut it, but have done and continue to do major work.

We support the roof in several places with temporary 2x2 posts along the aisle inside when the camper is in storage. Also keep a cover on it when in storage.

So far we have:

- pulled, re-sealed and re-installed all of the windows
- replaced the brakes, drums, bearings, wheels, tires and springs
- ripped out the floor covering and patched rotted areas in the floor, then re-covered with foam tiles
- replaced floor-to-frame bolts
- replaced and re-wired all towing lights
- replaced the converter and upgraded to 30 amp AC
- re-painted interior

Right now replacing all of the rusty bolts holding the cabinets to the body. Also re-working the kitchen counter and sink.

Anyway good luck with your 1700!
