2004 Scamp 19 ft 5th wheel and Honda Ridgeline
Hello, I am thinking of buying a Honda Ridgeline to replace my old Ford F-150. Want to make sure that there would be no issues around installing the Scamp tow system in a Ridgeline, etc. Anyone out there pull their Scamp 19 with a Ridgeline? Thanks!

I tow a1977 17’ Boler with my 2007 Honda Ridgeline
No problems with towing
I would recommend an RV dealer wire your truck. Also buy an electric brake connect if your trailer has brakes.
No troubles with either 7 pt or 4 pt connection

Won't you lose access to the trunk/spare tire? If that doesn't matter, I'd call Scamp and ask them as they do installations.

Please disregard my previous post regarding Scamp and Ridgeline. Found earlier thread which clarifies that they are not a good match.

You don't lose access really. The tailgate opens from top or side. The hidden compartment in a Honda Ridgeline is a really bonus for towing as you can keep any accessories there - like chocks, batteries, propane tanks, bbq's, coleman stoves etc.
The opening of the truck bed at the back can be limited potentially by the handle of the trailer front hitch that you have to wind up or down to release the trailer from the Honda Ridgeline - but
I have found I rarely have to go into the truck bed when I'm travelling and if I do there is still easy access
Hope this helps.

what is the reason for the two not matching?
I find this interesting, as the Honda Ridgeline has a good sized
6 cylinder engine for towing and I have had no trouble, and I don't have sway bars when I tow

Oops I just saw you're talking about a 5th wheel. No way you can have a
5th wheel and access the under storage at the back of a Honda Ridgeline
Sorry. My error, I should have read that !!

I am aware of one owner that fabricated a custom hitch that mounted forward of the in-bed trunk to retain access and cantilevered over the trunk for correct ball placement. From what has been posted, it has worked well for many thousands of miles.
So it can be done, but not with off-the-shelf components. There’s some risk involved, including possible loss of warranty and liability for any damage resulting from failure of an untested hitch.

marriage made in heaven
I own a 2018 Honda ridgeline and a restored 1985 19
I am a very mechanically inclined individual who has never been afraid to tear something apart.
I owned the truck before i got the trailer and fell in love with the ride and performance of the truck.
I searched endlessly for help in trying to figure out who would mount a hitch in it for me. many said it could not be done...
so i figured out how to get the bed out of the truck (it wasn't hard)
and built a chassis mounted under carriage to support an old style scamp 5th wheel hitch.
I took me and a buddy with a welder about 3 hours to fabricate and install
I can still use the trunk with the hitch in the bed
the truck is very capable with the setup and i get around 17 MPG at 70

It may just be the camera angle, but it looks to be connected further forward in the bed than most Scamp hitch installations I've seen. Any interference between the loft and the cab?
I'd love to see pictures of the hitch you fabricated. Even better if you have pictures of the chassis attachment.

no interference with the cab the trailer can turn out 90 degrees from the truck when backing but no further.
unfortunately i did not take pictures of the reinforcements i did when I had the composite bed out of the truck
but i could draw a sketch if someone decided to do the installation
i could add a picture of the hitch mounted in the bed when things thaw out up here
when it is completely finished I plan on posting the whole rebuilding of the trailer

Where there's a will, there's a way. Good for you. Is the Ridgeline 2wd or awd and would it have mattered for your installation?

Honda apparently only ships AWD to the snow belt. Same with the CRV which I own. I suspect a dealer can get you one but it most likely would involve a dealer swap and a twenty something joy riding your new truck several hundred miles.

Use to tow mine with a Chevrolet Colorado 4x4, V6. Never had a problem at all towing. This is a picture of my last camping trip in the Scamp. Was camping at Ocracoke NC at the beach. Have since went back to the dark side with a big 5er.

Towing Bigfoot
I have used my Ridgeline to tow a rare Bigfoot 5th wheel for 10 years. I have never had a problem. My hitch is a standard Reese slider. I had to weld the 2 rails to 2"x6" tubes that span the truck bed and bolt into the frame. The rear rail sits just forward of the trunk lid, so I can access the trunk when hooked up.
I do a lot of camping in the Colorado mountains and the Ridgeline does just fine. The Bigfoot is heavier than the Scamp, weighing in at about 4,000 lbs. I only keep a few gallons of fresh water when traveling and try to keep the weight of supplies to a minimum.
