a monopole does sorta work without a ground plane, its just not very efficient. there are vertical dipoles that look like a monopole, that are in fact tapped in the middle, usually these have a bump there, sometimes a loading coil.

for FM broadcast radio reception, I've had quite good results with the classic indoor 'folded dipole' made from 300 ohm flat cable wired as a T, but I find the double layer of reflectix insulation in the walls of my Escape attenuate the ~100Mhz signal about 50%

I get pretty good results with my eagle one (a mono pole) By using my trailer frame as a counterpoise, but it is all in one direction and still does not mess that much with the pattern. I do get a bit better transmission with a using actual radials. Without the trailer frame it will not even load.

True on the looks like a monopole. But they are also sold as monopoles. Basically about anything vertical That is a single straight pole on the outside is called a monopole by the marketing folks.

I do have more issues with the aluminum foil like vapor barrier in the sides of the scamp than I do from the lake of true radials.

I agree with a ground plane not being crucial... How about that thin metal tape - stuff where one side is sticky?

My temp setup

Just testing some stuff. Solar.... inverter.... batteries.

I just had to give the mast a try. Actually got it balanced without having to rig the guy wires 1st try. Three sections higher than in this picture *laugh*. About 30 feet.

And no. I did that part in the middle of the backyard away from the trailer

Diesel heater sitting on top of the old ammo box fits perfectly in the ammo box. Thinking about tac welding the box to where the propane can was. Drill holes for the exhaust and hoses... I have two, Any idea what ammo went in these?

With my scamp for my VHF/UHF I side mounted the antenna so got one that does not require a ground plane at all. If I were to have mounted on the top then I would have had a ground plane as the insulation actually uses an aluminum foil vapor barrier and so that would have done it.

My HF is an eagle one that does require a ground plane or counterpoise. It is mounted on the rear corner. So the aluminum foil only is reducing the effectiveness of the antenna.
