Antique Dometic Refigerator Repair

We own a 55 year old trailer that has been well maintained inside, but the Dometic refrigerator doesn't work. Are there people who work on these old things. We would like to keep the interior restored and would prefer not to have to replace it with something that fit or match the interior.

Yes! Anyone who owns one.

Depending on what's wrong, it may or may not be an easy fix. Does it light but not get cool, or not even light? Won't work on electricity?

The Dometic

Am embarrassed to say I don't know what is wrong with it. I'm wondering if there is a repair service/repairman out there that specializes in these old things. My local propane people can't.

If you are able to find the manual for your model on line, you may be able to perform the normal maintenance checks yourself and with luck get it working again.
I know on ours, Dometic recommends annual cleaning of the flue and propane orifices. If any spiders, etc, get in there then it won't work properly.

What model of fridge is it? There are manuals available (here as well) that can help you out. I had to trouble shoot my Dometic 2401 3-way (only 30 years old ). Got it running fine - all it needed was a cleaning. Depending on the age and the model, the burner assembly and lighting set-up will differ.
I have a couple of service/installation manuals here that might be of some help to you if I know what model you are fighting with.

Look inside the fridge for a label.

Might actually be right there on the front top of the door. R-something, RM-something. Mine is an RM2401.

Here's a web page with a listing of Dometic service centers in Washington. If you have a Norcold, there will likely be some overlap with these.

I just got my 1982 Burro with a 3 way Dometic fridge. I'm not sure but it probably needs a cleaning. Now HOW do you clean these bits? Wire brush? Bronze or stainless? Can anyone offer details? Does anyone have a manual they can share? I'd be happy to scan and share, or if I find one online, will do the same.

Alan,

Congratulations on your new trailer.

Start by updating your profile so people know what trailer you have. Then, post a model number for the fridge you are asking about.

The manuals are pretty easy to find and download from off the web. There's also some here in the Documents section.

https://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/downloads.php

You don't want to insert anything into the jet orifice as that would damage it. Using the forum search function and Google and including your Dometic(?) model number will bring up a great number of threads.

Some of the information you will online in the forums is true, and almost all is well-meaning.
