any PA Trillium owners? need advice!!
Hi folks,
I just bought a '76 Trillium from a woman in Mass. who sold it to me with the Mass certificate of Registration (which is what they use instead of title) and a bill of sale..
took these things to auto tags guy who told me that I can't get the tags or registration because the VIN # is not 13 digits.
The VIN # which was imprinted on the tongue, has 9 digits.
Has anyone had any experience with this? any solutions??

Is your VIN # in this format?:
13-110xxxx, where the xxxx is four digits, or 13110xxxx? If so, that is the correct number All of my Trilliums are registered using that number. It should also be on the data sheet stuck to the inside of your closet door.
Please take a look at this thread. Feel free to add your trailer to the ever growing list:

I've heard of this problem before with PA, apparently your state can be a nightmare with trailer registrations. Some have found the solution to be to register it in Maine, which I believe can be done online or by mail. You probably can't get away with just stamping some extra numbers to end up with 13. Some other fiberglass owner I know bought a trailer out of state and then spent weeks trying to get a PA registration. I would do the Maine thing and save yourself a lot of aggravation.

The auto tags guy must have been a young pup. 13 digit VINs did not come out until after the Trilliums stopped being made in Markham Ontario. Call your DMV or equivalent and ask them what they recommend, or search their site.
US standards for VINs did not come into place until 1981

If they need proof of typical Trillium serial numbers of the era, David Tilston has been collecting them in this thread that includes photos of original data sheets.

Some states might want to create a new 13 digit VIN and stamp it on your trailer. If so, the year of manufacture followed by the Trillium VIN is an easy solution. E.g. 1976-(9 digit VIN) = 13 digits.

Not sure if this helps, but the PA state definitions do not state a specific number of digits for a VIN
Section 102 - Title 75 - VEHICLES
§ 102. Definitions.
Subject to additional definitions contained in subsequent provisions of this title which are applicable to specific provisions of this title, the following words and phrases when used in this title shall have, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise, the meanings given to them in this section:
"Number." When used in the context of identification means a series of numerals or letters or both, with or without a prefix or suffix.
"Vehicle identification number" or "VIN." A combination of numerals or letters or both which the manufacturer assigns to a vehicle for identification purposes, or, in the absence of a manufacturer-assigned number, which the department assigns to a vehicle for identification purposes.

At least your registration papers matches your VIN. I had a problem with my boler
American, the NY DMV used to use their own codes back in the 70's to help ID what a VIN was for. They put TC for Trailer - Camper or something of the sort in front of my VIN. That caused problems for me registering locally here in Ontario.

Resolved.
The solution was simple: take it to a different auto tags guy.
So my new Trillium is now legal! High fives all around!!
Thank you all for your help!!
