Are these items needed for our travels

Hi All,

So continuing our education about RVing for next year in our Casita ID.

Will I likely need any of the following?

1) 30 amp power cord
2) Adaptor for 30 to 50 amp
3) Portable surge protector
4) Water Pressure Regulator

Also, concerning when we are parked & such; What items & where should I buy items that I should have to secure & level my Independence at campsites.
IE; like wheel chucks, etc. - is there maybe a "kit" that has this stuff in a package or??

Water pressure regulator - Pretty sure your going to want that. When you hook your RV water system to the park system it will prevent overpressure from park from blowing leaks in your trailer.

A 15 amp adaptor is useful at some back-country campsites , and you can use it at home or if staying at a freinds home .

1) The trailer should come with a 30 amp cord. Never had a need for an extra. Get yourself a good outdoor extension cord - you will find far more uses for it.

2) not a bad idea but suspect you will find that a 30 to 15 amp adapter will get more usage.

3) Never hurt to have protection - if camping at a spot with questionable power but lots of people never used them and have not needed one.

4) YES to the water pressure regulator - don't leave home without out it ;-)

My other don't leave home without items would be:
A package of 10 plastic levelling blocks
At least 2 wheel chokes.
An outdoor extension cord.
An extra water hose.
A tongue wheel choke.
A tire iron that fits the trailer lugs and the hot water tank drain.

3 - I've never seen people use them. If you get one can you post what you buy?

4 - I had one and now don't. What I do is just regulate the water at the spigot. You don't need a lot of pressure. Just turn the spigot enough so the water flows.

The spigot will only change the volume not the pressure.

We have stayed at parks where the water pressure has been between 90 &100 PSI,
I had several hoses swell up and leak from high pressure before I got smart and bought a pressure regulator. We carry both a 50 to 30 and a 30 to 15 amp adaptor .The 30 to 15 adaptor is a must in my book. We carry a 20 and a 30 amp extension cord. We do not carry a surge protector but we don't take any sensitive electronic equipment camping.

Lower the volume lower the pressure.

Think of it this way. If the spigot's max is 10, turn it until it is a 3. That will lower the pressure. If there is a pressure surge and the max goes to a 15, you 3 will only go to 4.5.

It really depends where you camp. You only need these items if you camp where there are hookups. Private campgrounds, you bet. Public campgrounds, it depends. Here in Vermont, no hook ups. Camp in just about any southern campground, you'll want the power cord for sure. It gets hot down there. Raz

A standard valve will regulate flow but a valve that is 50% open /closed does not restrict the flow to 50%. The flow rate is not linear. Ball ,globe and gate valves are not designed to regulate pressure . There will be a pressure drop across the valve but again it is not linear.
IE Closing the valve half way does not cut the pressure in half.

My, how quickly this thread went from the original topic to a study of water pressure and volume. May I suggest another thread, on another forum, for the study of pressure dynamics?

1) You should have one with the camper, extensions are sometimes but very rarely needed.

2) An adapter for going from 120 volts, 15 or 20 amp socket, to the plug on your Casita (no doubt 30 amp RV) is VERY handy and cheap. Other adapters are rarely needed. I do have a 50 amp service to 30 amp socket adapter to plug my camper into a 50 amp circuit if there is 50 amp, but no 30 amp service. I have never used and doubt I ever will. I would carry a 50 foot regular (120 v, 15 amp) extension cord.

3) There s much debate about the need for surge suppressors so you will hear YES and NO a lot. I am using this non-portable one. It does more than just suppress surges.

4) Yes, cheap and easy insurance. Might not be needed but its CHEAP AND EASY. Just do it.

PS, "75 feet to water, 50 ft to electric" is the exception, but if you want to always be ready for any occurrence, carry everything.

Pressure and volume is totally relevant to the OPs question as to a reason for carrying and using one, not a study, just fact. Barely cracking the valve for not using one is rolling the dice at best, you may get lucky but.....

For my needs;

1) I do carry a short 30A extension, and have only used it a few times. I like to set up the way I want, which is often not right by the pedestal
2) I don't carry one, nor have ever needed it (yet). I do carry and use a 30A to 15A a fair bit though.
3) I don't use one, though probably should. Always a good idea.
4) I always use one, it stays connected to my water hose when stowed.

A box of something like Lynx Blocks is handy for levelling, as well as under the stabilizers if needed due to height. I actually carry two sets, as they are small and light, as I usually camp off the grid, and a lot of sites are way off level. I do have 4 wheels to level up though.

For a single axle, I would carry 4 chocks.

So the Casita Independence has 30 amp already installed, then I just likely need the 50' Outdoor Extension Cord (120v/ 15 amp) and the 30 to 15 Amp Adaptor?

Are most of these other items gotten at HD or big box stores or should I look at RV places? For instance, that 10 pack of leveling blocks, wheel chucks, etc.

Carol can you explain these 2 in your list?

"A tongue wheel choke." - what is this for?
"A tire iron that fits the trailer lugs and the hot water tank drain." - HW drain is same lugs as Tire lugs?

I use bottled water or a Brita jug filter - not an in line filter.

Well that is an interesting question.. IMHO, if you plan to drink from the "fresh" water tank, then yes. But many people do not trust the fresh water tank, and / or don't want to bother with sanitizing it often enough, and instead they drink from bottled water.
