Asbestos?

I will get the old original furnace and 3 way fridge in my (new to me) 1976 Trillium serviced before trying to use them. In the mean time I've discovered some gasket material around the firebox in the furnace that looks a lot like asbestos. Given the year, it seems plausible. The serviceman tells me they simply wash them off and clean up but I'll hve him replace them with something else if the units are otherwise okay.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this? Does anyone know of other places in the 70's Trilliums where asbestos may have been used? The old cushion flooring in some RVs used to, but this floor has been replaced a couple of times, once by me.

If it's crumbling or fluffy, it's more dangerous....must be removed WET. soap added to the water will help it absorb to protect yourself. Disposal varies state to state, so check your own state regulations. We removed HARD asbestos siding ourselves; it is worth every caution, but doable with them.

It is unlikely asbestos, usually furnace insulation will be foil backed they did fall apart in time. Ours was rock wool and foil backed on old furnace some will have glass bat with foil or the stuff you see in old speakers. We have a new unit now no fuss to start just turn switch on set temp instant heat. Changed out the Coleman for an Atwood. Exaust almost lined up getting good at fiberglass and gelcoat lol
