Ash Tray ideas?!?

So in my Uhaul CT I currently have 2 ash trays next to the bed. Considering I dont smoke they dont seem to serve much purpose. Does anyone have any examples or ideas of what has been done to make these more useful?

I was thinking I would take out the one by the sink, cut the hole out bigger and insert a plastic cubby hole like container (for cell phones, wallet, etc) but I have had ZERO luck finding anything that would work close. Does anyone know of a website or company that sells something along the lines of a container/cubby insert or am I just going to have to rig one up?

I took out the ashtrays themselves and left in the chrome plated inserts. On the sink side I mounted a 12 volt socket and next to it, the switch for my water pump. Having them recessed is nice so they don't get bumped. The closet side is still empty. I put a very small key chain LED light there at night.

I did this to the VT:
Switch is to control a relay to turn on or off the inverter when I am on 12V. prevents the parasitic discharge when I don't need the inverter but want 12V lights. Coax connector is for TV antenna feed and the eye bolt is for bungee cord to keep drawers from coming out while traveling. had to reinforce with a fiberglass strip behind the panel for the eye bolt otherwise it is a direct bolt on using some white lucite i had.

You might find something to fit in a marine supply store.

Thanks guys those are all good ideas!

Bobbie thanks for the tip, I ended up searching a few marine sites and found boat glove boxes. I'll have to measure the depth but these could work perfect. They also have a lock which is nice in case I need some where to store my wallet/gun/etc...

Some cars and trucks had plastic cubby inserts in the dash, if there is an auto junkyard that let's you pick your own parts you should be able to find something. Got me thinking now, as I haven't come up with anything yet to make use of the ashtray space.

If I remember right, and I've been known to be wrong... the thing that looks like an ash tray can be mounted to the outside (with a mod) and it looks like a fresh water fill! Dang, wish I could find the picture...

Does it have a metal "bale" to close it?

I plan to put an outlet there with a 12 volt acc like a lighter and a USB port on one side and the other I plan to put a dash pocket out of a 1998 Toyota Camry front just below the radio. But the boat glove box looks like a good plan as well.

@841K9 - Ill leave the other ash tray just in case I start smoking!

I ended up just cutting it up and extending it with some sheet metal and put some liner inside it to hold my phone and wallet. Were heading out on our trip in a few days and didn't have time to wait for the glove box to get delivered.

With just a little trimming I installed receptacle boxes with a solid plate as a cover. I can now makeshift this into 12V or 120V receptacles, LED lighting, switches boxes, or anything my wife's little heart desires.

Good place for a switch for the water pump.

Wondering what you were doing with the ashtrays once you take them out. I'd be interested in them.

How rare are the U-Haul CT13 ash trays?

Not very. pretty much standard for the automotive industry at the time. Have 2 if you want them.
