If I have two 6 volt batteries that provide 220 AH each, does that give me 440 AH at 12 volts, or just 220 AH?

Your two six volt batteries in series will yield 12 volts at 220 AH. I wouldn't say just.. Raz

So, is there any advantage to having two 6 volt batteries over having one 12 volt one, if the total AH is the same?

Noel,
As a rule of thumb battery capacity is related to the weight of the battery (the lead and acid).

The reason for using two 6 volt batteries in series is to increase the available amp hours and to still be able to physically handle the battery.

A single 12 volt battery with 220 amp hr capacity could be made and may be available. The problem is that a single 12 volt battery with this capacity would weigh about 140 lbs.

For the capacity involved what first comes to mind is weight. If I am not mistaken aren't those batteries about 100 lbs. each? Imagine if they were in one package.
