Molded FGRV shells are constructed by applying gel coat (pigmented polyester resin) into a mold, then applying chopped or woven
fiberglass together with clear polyester resin. The result is a shell with a shiny, smooth outer layer, the gel coat layer. No paint is involved, however, older FGRVs may have a severely deteriorated gel coat, along with fiberglass body repairs. At that point, its common to simply paint over the gel coat. Thus the caution to check whether the entire body has been painted before removing spray over paint.
