Trailer: 1974 Boler and 1988 Bigfoot

Has anyone ever had a Bigfoot apart for repair I know now that the top joint over laps the lower joint so than why do they silicone it because after years it looks terrible or do I have to remove all silicone and redo it or just leave it off it looks better off ?????
