Boler door reshaping
Hi I am fairly new here recently bought a 79 17' Boler I have put in new brass pivots in the hinges and the bottom seems tight but the top of the door has about a 1 inch gap has anyone found a way to reshape the curve on these doors?
Thanks any thoughts are appreciated

Although many have recurved their door to make it fit better I still insist that the shape of the door remains constant and the actual body on the 13' Boler has sagged some. The sagging body will result in slightly more curve to the profile where the hinges mount and the result is the door gaps. Actually a very small change in the curvature and or misalignment of the door hinges can cause a considerable gap. Try adjusting the door and hinge position first, the upper hinge often moves down and towards the back of the trailer so adjusting the door hinges so the door sits square in the opening and tighter to the top of the frame.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but there is a gap at the bottom right of my door as well. If it's the body that is sagging, is that fixable? And in what way would it be sagging? Inward? The bunk in my Boler was removed and converted to a permanent dinette. Maybe supports are missing there and this caused issues? I can't see a sag, but it could be unnoticeable. Thanks!!

What Ian has said makes good sense for both Steve and Loren's situation. Imagine the roof sinking a bit (or even a lot for the sake of understanding), which would cause the wall to bow out, pushing the hinges outward. As the door is a fairly stable component, and really tough to bend, this effect pushes out in the middle of the door where the hinges are, and either the top, bottom, or both ends of the door would move out away from the body.

Oh, and welcome Loren. Always glad to see another Calgarian aboard.
And welcome to Steve too, I see you are fairly new too, and live at the gateway to one of the best canoeing spots in the world. Also a great loop to ski around too.

Thank you! I just got my Boler and am trying to prioritize the projects. I wouldn't want this sag to worsen, and this might be one of the first things that I address. I noticed on the new Scamps, there is a support on the inside-left of the door. Perhaps I need something like that.

This is a pic from Scamp showing the support beside the door. I don't know if this could be a solution for a sag that causes a bowing out of the hinges.

Early Scamp's and Bolers had a curved 1"x1" metal support riveted to the hing side of the door (on the body side). The rivets often break or become loose which will allow the belly of the trailer to bow out. Refastening this metal supprt can help.
Correct hinge adjustment also is key. If you could post pictures of your door in the closed position I can probably make some suggestions

Here are a few pictures of my door. It seems to not close tightly on both sides, but more pronounced on the right side. I didn't see rivets on the outside-doorside, but i can see rivets on the opposite side of the boler. The 1x1 metal thing is on the inside. It doesn't go all the way to the floor, not sure if it is supposed to.

The brass balls on both hinges are definitely worn out which will cause the door to sit lowed in the opening, you can get hinge rebuild kits through Scamp trailer.
Rebuilt hinges should look like this (although these are scamp hinge but the ball & bolt are the same)
If you could also take a picture of the door and how it sits in the opening, I would like to see the gap around the door on the top and sides.
Kind of a picture like this:

I tried to get a good picture of the whole door, while holding branches and the camera with one hand. The Boler is parked next to a giant spruce, which I smooshed into and was rather spring loaded by branches, in order to get what i did.. LOL, it was awkward.. but I hope you can see the door okay.

The door fit in the opening looks real good. I would start by rebuilding the hinges which will raise the door about 1/2" which does not sound like much but can make a huge difference on fit.

I need to do more work to the hinges a little build up. There is about a inch of weather stripping along the top that the PO had installed

Hi Steve.. I joined in your thread thinking we had similar issues.. I hope we can both get our doors straightened out!
Thanks Ian! I am going to rebuild my hinges. This I think is something that I can manage.

Since you are in Canada, and shipping (customs) can be a problem when contacting Scamp... see if Paul has what you need for your hinges: Fibreglass RV Parts, Repairs, and Service by Paul Neumeister

Steve, it is hard to tell but it does look like your hinges also need a rebuild. The other thing I would check on yours is make sure the screws that secure the wooden body supports by the door on the inside are tight. I would be investigaing why the trim piece has bowed out like it is, might be just the glue has failed and it has fallen off, but it the body has sagged a little it may also cause this.

I pulled the trim off to see what the support was made of. I put new brass balls in but I think I am going to build the hinges up with some liquid metal. The support seems tight but maybe I should take it off and check a little closer and put new screws in.
