Trailer: 1980 Bigfoot 17 ft
Posts: 23
Does anyone know if the roof of a 17' 1980 Bigfoot Trailer can bear a significant weight. I have to make some minor repairs to my newly acquired Bigfoot and the vent is dead center in the roof unreachable from a ladder on either side of the vehicle. Can I lay on the roof safely, will the trailer take my weight. Thanks

Can you rig up a scaffold over the top somehow? Ladder on either side, with a platform across the top. Maybe get something from a "rent-all" place.

I'm doing work on my Horizon and its built similar to a Bigfoot. I have also owned a Bigfoot 17.5 and did the same thing on it when I removed a TV antenna. I took a piece of 1/2" plywood about 2'x3' and placed it on the roof to spread out the weight. Its been working out fine on the Horizon and I've done a lot of work on the roof using the plywood. I had to take out the fantastic fan, and clean the roof of tar that someone put on for some reason. But its cleaning up very nice, now that being said my Horizon has plywood in the roof along with foam so its pretty sturdy and thick. I don't remember if the Bigfoot had plywood or not. One more thing if you can put your weight over a partition that would also help. Good Luck

I have a 2006 21rb Bigfoot trailer. Most likely made different than your 1980 17’ Bigfoot and I’m not sure which one would have a stronger roof.

I get up on my roof each time I wax my trailer. I was up there to install my two Max Air vents and I spent some time up there getting my solar panels installed. The roof on my trailer felt very secure and I had no problems. I do try to distribute my weight (200 lbs) and stay close to the edge.

I also go barefoot to help avoid scratching the gel coat. I would avoid walking around up there with socks and no shoes. After a good waxing, you could easily slide off.

My weight is 170lbs and I did some work on the roof of our previous 1986 17' Bigfoot and never had any problem, if the repair necessitate a lot of moving around I would suggest you put a sheet of plywood on the roof to help redistributing your weight.

I saw some ladders at home depot that you can fold like a scaffolding, now I dont know if you can go 8' up then 8' across and 8' down.
