Even one would likely have prevented this tragedy, though redundancy is good. Very sad.

There is another takeaway worth mentioning. Just because you are not using fuel-burning appliances inside your RV doesn’t mean you don’t need a working CO detector(s). In this case the source of the carbon monoxide was external- a generator sitting outside the trailer. In the close quarters of a music festival, parking lot, or even some campgrounds, it needn’t even be your own.

In addition to the factory installed one, I installed a second right near our bed pillows.

My suggestion is to get one that has a readout. I've found that seeing small amounts (below where a non readout detector sounds off) warns you that a problem is looming. I have This Kidde CO detector in my Escape 21.

Jon Vermilye we have the same Kidde CO detector by our bed, love the readout of the CO levels. Very nice if you ever are parked near idling semi's. We were parked in a corner where a semi wouldn't fit, but there was still a bunch of them pretty close.

Our hard wired one went off all the time about 2AM so we figured it was heat from the converter since it was under the bed. We pulled the fuse and bought a couple of battery operated ones. They never showed any readout. One is right at the bed. We won't leave home without at least one. I've had friends die from carbon monoxide. Smoke alarms, propane detectors and 2-3 fire extinguishers also are needed. I'm very cautious with everything.
