Casita refrigerator door help

The bottom trim on the refrigerator door has split and needs replacement. I got the part...now I have a couple of questions. This is just a trim piece, not the hinge.

I really think the panel that is on the door is too heavy. Is it possible to replace it with something lighter? I wouldn't mind something that I could paint with chalk paint even. Suggestions?

Also I was, wondering if anyone had taken the door off to do this repair, is it easy to do?

I have no idea if the panel in the door actually add structural support for the door, and if I will be asking for trouble if I replace the original panel. Opinions?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The door panel is just the piece of fiberglass they cut out of the cabinet to install the fridge. It can be replaced with any thin material about 1/8" or thinner. I made up a pine one for mine when I redid the interior (had to shave it down from 5/16 to 1/8 around the edges). On my old ventura trailer , I used some formica. The same piece broke on my 98 Casita so I screwed it on from the front instead, with some wood screws. Its holding well.

I had the same thing happen. I just placed some double sided adhesive foam behind the panel to hold it and to support the weight so that the plastic trim does not have to. So far it is working well.

2015 Spirit Delux, bottom trim popped off, 3 try's to figure out which way the trim snapped back on and laying on the floor. My "panel" is actually a little to wide (bulge) and should be trimmed down a bit. But for now it's back on and holding :-)
