Question Charger heat ??

Hi group

We just picked up a used 2012 13' Scamp. In the drivers side, lower, rear compartment ( under the seat ) there is the electric fuse box and a separate battery charger. The charger produced heat, the compartment is closed off.
Is this a problem ? Should I vent that area ?

Thanks
Tom

Hey Tom

I guess it depends how much heat is generated, might put a themometer in there and close it up for a period of time, this will let you know if too hot. I be sure the charger is not sitting on the floor but on a raised bracket with space on all sides.

Tom the battery charger you are seeing I suspect is your converter - thats where mine has been located since 92 without a problem. If it needed venting I suspect Scamp would have done that long ago - just try to avoid putting anything on it - I put a small grate/fence inside the hatch to stop things stored in the hatch from coming in contact with it.

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum. While heat does kill electronics it might take 50 years to do it. You are probably fine but what I would recommend would be to find a copy of the manufacturers installation instructions and see if the Scamp installation meets their guidelines for ventilation and clearance. By the way, congratulations on the new Scamp. Raz

Heat Buildup
I haven't heard all that many good things about the "Americana" (sp?)converter, and personally had one go up in smoke in our 2007 Scamp. If you check at your local RV store they have 3" diameter "Battery Compartment Vents". I would put one on the outside or two (one high & one low) on the front of the dinette seat on the inside. Cheap insurance that might help. Even more so if you happen to also have a water heater living in that same space.
