clam shelter

Just wondering how you all transport your clam (or gazelle)shelters. We put it in the trillium but if we need to stop for the night ie: a walmart, it is really in the way. Worried if I threw it into the box of the truck it would go missing. I am really second guessing my purchase as I got the 12ft one.

We have the 12' Pavilion Clam tent too and love it. It fits in back of our Honda Ridgeline truck which has a lockable canopy.

My 5-sided Gazelle just fits lengthwise in the back of my suv with the back seat folded up. The 6-sided Clam was too long and was heavier, so I sold it and got the Gazelle.

I don't really use it much, though. Only if it's rather cool outside and the bugs are problematic. In warm weather it gets too hot in there, with the tight mesh restricting air flow. Plus the mesh obscures the view of any scenery too much for my taste.

We carried that huge 6 sided Clam for two years, but rarely used it. We purchased the much smaller 5 sided Gazelle at a RV show for 1/2 price and carried it another two years. Now we only carry it to the "Pelikan/Kazcek Family Campout". After 6 years of ownership the Clam was sold for $250.

The Gazelle seemed half the weight, and was easily a foot shorter than the Clam. It was all I could do to move the Clam anywhere, so in the end it was not missed.

Food for thought,

Perry

We also have a 5-sided Gazelle tent and love it too. While our Gazelle tent isn't as roomy and snow/wind tolerant as our 6-sided Clam Pavilion Tent, it only weighs 24 pounds versus 41 pounds for the Clam tent. We use these screened tents largely for our cats and buggy/inclement weather's conditions. And we also have and use our driver and passenger side Keder rail awnings too which also tolerate the often windy and rainy conditions on our Oregon coast while shielding our windows from rain allowing them to be open. These awnings also improve our absorption refrigerator efficiency and eliminate/reduce our need for air conditioning.

We have the 5-Sided Clam and mostly carry it in the 5'-6" long bed of our F150. We do have a lockable cover. But we have been playing around with carrying it inside the camper.

We don't set it up all the time at camp so the bed of the truck means lessing moving it around.

Our Clam had the built-in wind walls that rolled up, so in the travel bag it was much larger and heavier than the screen only version. I know it weighed much more than a 40# bag of salt, probably 60-70 pounds. It was a beast!

Enjoy,

Perry

Our Clam tent also has the built-in wind walls that roll up too. While it is maybe 16 inches longer and is much more bulky (it has a 110 SF footprint versus the 60 SF footprint of the Gazelle tent), it does weigh 41 pounds. If you use metal stakes and put them in the bag with the tent, you might end up with a 60 pound bag. We keep all our many stakes for both our two tents and our two awnings in a separate bag.

Carrying Clam Shelter

We carry our Clam in a rooftop cargo box. I selected the Yakima box specifically to be long enough (just) for the Clam
