Cleaning the drains on Hehr Sliding Windows

Charles, I had a window leak last nite, so today I was out there with my chunk of weedwhacker mono but it just wouldn't feed in. Whilst messing about with it, I discovered the little plastic hood on the frame can be removed and replaced (it can also be lost if you drop it in the wrong place, but that's another story), it has a bending clip on each side.

With the hoods removed, I was able to put a thin metal rod (small bronze braising rod) all the way across, from one opening to the other, without bending it. In the process, I removed a plug of mud and calcium chloride (courtesy of Canadian roads,esp Yukon Terr) about 3/4 long that wouldn't budge for the mono.

Sure wish I had the crankout windows on the rear; I have had zero problems with the ones on the side and they give more ventilation and protection from rain.

Good tip Pete!

Where is the plug, on the face of the window frame? I always thought that was to cover up a rivet used to hold the window in place during installation.

Was the "Yukon" plug along the top, bottom or side of the window?

The plug was cemented mud inside the drain channel (left side in short, curved channel), having blown in there during my various wanderings and then being wetted down by rain. The hoods are on frame bottom (squeeze sides together to remove) and cover slot hole that goes in two directions each. Rod to break it up if needed, then fuzzed-up whacker mono to drag and push the dirt out.

Brazing rod comes in various sizes, most of mine are about 1/32" I think, left over from oxy/acetylene torch I had in a previous life, rods being retained as being potentially useful. Were I looking for more, or something similiar, I would go to someplace like Ace Hdwre and look in the carton of various hobby supplies of brass and aluminum rods, angles, flats, balsa, etc., where you can buy just one or two, not a whole welding supply shop tube of them.

I carry insulated solid copper electrical wire in two sizes, AWG 14 and AWG 12. It's the handiest thing since water muffins.

If you strip the wire bare, it's a good soft rod for cleaning. If you leave the insulation on you can twist-tie with it or you can form it (it's very malleable) into hooks or other useful shapes.

It's cheap, cheap, cheap.
