Collapsible aluminum poles: strong, light weight and all that?
I am looking to buy some aluminum poles. I guess they could be collapsible, two-piece, or even just regular poles about 12 foot long that I could tie to the roof rack of the 4Runner. Does anyone have any recommendations? I hoping to get something strong enough to use for to hold up a tarp, hopefully also light-weight and easy to store? Inexpensive would be nice, but if someone knows of something really good, I would be willing to spend some $. I basically have no experience with aluminum poles and would love to learn from other peoples experience and knowledge.
Currently I carry a 9 foot 1 3/8 clear fir pole, which is kind of heavy and a bit too short, and I use an old windsurfing half-mast on top of an 8 ft 2x2 (fir) as an antenna mast. I am thinking I could do a lot better if I knew what aluminum poles to buy. Any advice is much appreciated!

I have a couple of these that I use for our fly tarp.
https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Te...94716657&psc=1
They store beneath the bench seat of our trailer.
If you need something longer and it doesn't need to collapsible, look at top rails for galvanized fence. They are 10.5 feet and strong enough that we used them to mount antennas.

I picked up a pair of poles from my local Cabelas for an additional tarp awning on my pop-up. I chose these with an over-center cam lock for the infinite adjustment rather than the push-pin type that have fixed increments of height adjustment.
I then realized that these are also suited as load bars to keep bins in the folded trailer from shifting while on the road.

We bought poles at Cabela's that look like those. They rusted and would no longer expand or shorten

I had a couple poles with over center cam locks that stuck and did not want to telescope. I used a pair of strap wrenches to break them loose with no damage. Now I always leave them loose or I take them apart between uses.
We had snap lock poles (with the buttons) when I was in Scouts on the dining flys. They worked well but every “setup” was with the same nylon fly so infinite adjustability was not necessary. They were strong though. Scout stuff is not cheap unless you can find a troop that’s disbanding. Which is very sad to me.

Check out paint roller extension poles at your local hardware store. They come on a number of lengths & usually telescope to 1/2 length.

I make sectional aluminum poles for hiking stick market. I use two on my Hummer to hold up a tarp awning. They are made from Easton tent pole tubing. Look at neoTrekk BigStik Hiking Staffs, External Frame StackPack, LuxuryLite, PillBottle Stove, BushCraft Kitchen. The 6ft Alloy BigStik pole is $99. They come apart into 16" Sections for storage.

I make my own out of tubing or conduit.
Buy 2 sizes at the hardware or box store. Get ones that slide inside each other. Usually 8 or sometimes 10 feet each, so consider how many you want. Get the little screw hose clamps. Cut and debur the tubes to the length you want. Easy to get some dowel rod that is a tight fit and glue into end for a peg. Carry a screwdriver or nut driver for the clamp. ENJOY!

Look for swimming pool aluminum telescopic poles
Check out swimming pool aluminum telescopic poles.

I have also seen telescopic poles made from carbon fiber. Very pricey, but light.

Go to any big flea market and look at the booths, many of them have conduit frames, there will be someone there who has connectors for them. We used one for a cover over the ramp of our trailer, which made a great gazebo with the ramp level. You can fix a tarp to the horizontals using ball bungies. Quartzite used to be a great source, with vendors making sun shades etc.
Whole thing comes apart and stows easily does not weigh much.
