Exactly! Get those wheels rolling. I have often remarked that the best thing about living in NE AZ is there is temperate camping weather within a half day's drive 12 months of the year.

If I were going to camp frequently for extended periods in below-freezing conditions- perhaps to pursue winter recreations- I'd be looking for a Bigfoot 2500-series. Fortunately for us, winter recreations are available less than an hour away, with a long, hot shower and wood stove waiting when we get home.

The problem of cool temperatures is easily solved with heat. A 5000 BTU electric heater keeps you warm in 'most all temperatures, and when it gets really cold the furnace will supplement your portable electric heater.


You may not have thought of a bigger problem; draining the holding tanks in cold weather. I had grand plans one March to go camping in Northern Minnesota, so we did. When I went to drain the black water tank the valve was frozen shut. In our case the problem was easily solved; hi temps the next day were well above freezing. This might not happen in your case.

Electric heat is indeed the best in a small trailer: quiet and steady versus the noisy cycling of a furnace. It also has the advantage that it comes in an unlimited supply, as most campgrounds do not meter the power.

However, it's not really free. In a poorly insulated trailer, you are using a shared resource very inefficiently. For a night or two here and there, fine. As a long-term, cold weather solution, not so good. The same could be said of heavy A/C use in hot weather.

When boondocking you become a lot more aware of your energy footprint. If you are burning through a tank of propane every other day, you will soon be looking for a trailer with better insulation. There aren't many. Some resort to building their own or doing a complete renovation to super insulate.

Or focus on travel to mild weather locations according to the season.

Just think of the Scamp as a "high-tec" windbreaker. Like an igloo. actually an igloo is probably a better insulator.
Dress for the weather, and sleep in your clothes. :-)

Mike Magee, I was intrigued by your Lil' Hauley. Enough that I went back and reviewed at least two threads. One from 2013 as a delivery trailer. Another from 2016 when you were modifying and considering selling it. It is a nice shell with good dimensions.

If I may add my two cents, check out/search "flexible styrofoam sheets" I think they combine a high r-value in limited space for your ceiling. Good luck.
