Creating shade? Keeping cool in a Scamp 13.

I have a bike rack on the back of my Scamp 13, which makes it pretty easy to mount a pole there (see picture). I have been thinking about possibly using that to create some shade for the Scamp itself. For example, I could mount a tilting umbrella to an 8 or 10 ft pole, as shown in the picture. Has anyone tried something like that?

I am imagining that something like a 7.5 ft diameter C-Hopetree (see picture) could create a reasonable amount of shade if I park at the right angle to the sun. Also, it will enable me to keep the back window open and that interior shade up.

Does anyone do this? Has anyone tried it? I would be very interested into your thoughts or experiences. (I also thought about a tarp with horizontal aluminum poles, kind of like a square-rigged sail, but I though this might be easier to rig.)

Could be a problem, even in a light breeze.

Back when we owned our Scamp, we would carry a Clam shelter for shade and a screen room. We went to the dark side in 2016 but I still turn my head when I see a fiberglass camper.

Seems too little to make an appreciable difference in interior comfort and too prone to wind damage. Even getting the shade to land on the trailer will take a lot of fussing (and adjusting as the day passes). Not worth it IMO.

Umbrellla

I use large tilting half umbrella as a substitute awning both on past Aliners and now a Snoozy. The umbrella is anchored in a flagpole fitting that is held in place by the trailer wheel. I find the umbrella much quicker and easier to put up and down if wind gets intense than a manual awning. Additionally, the better umbrellas will have a wind relief interior cone that will relive too much wind pressure. Another bonus is the umbrellas can usually be purchased very inexpensively. Our unbrella is usually situated to shade the side windows on our Snoozy.

White mesh tarp - The mesh minimizes wind loading, and improves air circulation.

I tried various things including a 12 x 16 white tarp on tent poles over the entire camper . It helped but caught the wind and rain. What I settled on was insulated reflective coverings on all the windows and facing the nose south whenever possible.

Mesh would be less prone to catching wind and rain than solid fabric.

I’ve seen a few people rig up small awnings over the windows using C-channel attached with VHB tape. That allows you to keep the windows open for ventilation. It also works in rain.

Here's one take on that approach with how-to details.

Shade for 13 ft scamp

We use a 12×12 popup over the whole trailer. Works good for us

I made roll-up/down shades out of a black out material called Roc Lon, (White only available by the yard at fabric stores such as JoAnn) and later replaced these with black out curtains made of commercial curtains (The advantage is that they come in many colors). These custom shades not only keep out light but they have an insulating property which keeps the interior of the trailer cool. I even made coverings for the emergency roof hatch and the "Fantastic Fan". On hot days and during the night I keep the window open slightly to allow fresh air and, at night, to reduce condensation. This is a simple passive solution to keep the trailer cooler.

I like that idea! A 10x10 might even do it, we use one as an awning beside the trailer.
