I don't think the kid was in the trailer. The door latch was one thing I was not impressed with on the Scamps, although we have the same thing on our teardrop but with a rocker type lock, not the pin. But our teardrop is 69 years old so can't expect a modern latch on it.

I must say I really found this series of unfortunate events entertaining. It took my 67 year old self back to life at 27 with kids. Thank you for the adventure. I am positive I enjoyed it much more than you did!

We ended up taking the door off. It was a relatively easy fix, thank heavens. Was just complicated by darkness!

No one was in the camper. Turns out my six year old stuck the pin in the lock hole at some point while the door was opened. Once shut, there was no other option other than taking off the door!

Okay, Bill, you win!

When I bought my used Scamp, it had already acquired a patina from age and outdoor storage. If I were to polish those hinges, everything else on the trailer would look dingy, leading to another project and another...

Besides, if everything on the trailer shone and sparkled, I'd look dingy beside it.

You've probably solved this by now, but I wanted to share that you're certainly not alone. Our door latch failed entirely and locked us out when we were in South Dakota. Ended up having to remove a window to get in! Fortuantely, our camp neighbor had lots of such experience, and we had some window caulk in the trailer so we could reinstall it properly right there at camp.
