Hey you experienced RV-ers

Hey members of FGRV,

Calling anyone with fiberglass laying experience. Looking for guidance in replacing a 30+ year old plywood floor in my little sunrader rv.

Biggest issue I'm having, it seems the plywood floor is glassed into the the entire fiberglass shell. I can't just cut it out and replace, as it seems the camper shell is being supported by the plywood. So, if the floor was removed, the whole structure would no longer be supported.

Now there are a few ways I've figured this can be done:

1 raise and support camper shell just enough to cut out entire floor and slide floor out the back end like a piece of paper from an envelope (unsure if the fiberglass shell can be supported under its own weight)

**or**

2 Raise and support as before, but cut out flooring in sections...

My dream idea is to lay down a layer of aluminum sheet under the ply floor.

Any sunrader owners out there by the way?

Ive got the thing gutted, shower and fridge sitting in the overhead sleeper area

Resins & Pastes - Multi-Tech Products Store

I bought a lot of materials from Multi-Tech product last summer and recoated my 6 person hot tub. I went through about$ $1,500 worth of materials and ended with a very workable solid good looking result.
You will need a lot less.

Resin & Fiberglass Resurfacing Kit was what we bought (FRL). You may need something else they sell.

The folks there gave me very good advice and support.

The material comes out hard as a rock, yet slightly flexible. Very impressive.

A catalyst is mixed into the resin and gives you about 20 minutes of working time. The hotter the ambient temperature the faster you have to work.

Paint the epoxy to the scuffed surface, lay fiberglass mat sticks to epoxy. Saturate the material with more epoxy. Roll it out with a special metal roller. Keep repeating. Three coats of epoxy makes about a 1/4" surface. Easy. Dries fast, hardens in 20 minutes. Fully cures in 24 hours.
The second coat goes on even faster. The third coat was very fast.

I gave every coat days to cure. More for my back than anything else.
Wear gloves and very old clothes. Wear a mask when working with the fiberglass.


I would image a75-80 square foot floor should be a snap.
You work with small batches and have to measure carefully. I used an ebay postal scale than cost less than $10.

As far as worry or concern regarding walls and ceiling truss and brace everything. Better to over engineer than have a major catastrophe. Without seeing your project I can't comment further.

I can offer you Fiber Glass Mat - 50" wide as seen in the Multitech catalog.
To messy to take out and measure, as it sheds strands.

There should be enough for your project and at least save you some $.
Yours for the cost of shipping.

BTW why aluminum? Isn't that an expensive way to go?
