Highlander 7 way plug location

Hello. We have an Escape 17B that we tow with a 2016 Toyota Highlander. This works very well for us with one exception. Toyota's bracket for mounting the 7 pin receptacle is underneath the bumper so that the receptacle hangs down below it. (see photos) The car is not a high lift vehicle to begin with and we have scraped and bent the receptacle a number of times. (Most recently while exiting the KOA in Cedar City, UT) Does anyone know of an alternative method of mounting the receptacle that would solve this problem? We would love to hear from you if you have an idea. Thanks, Howard and Kim Brewer

I have a Subaru Crosstrek and I had enough access behind the bumper to cut a hole in the plastic trim with a hole saw and mount the receptacle using stainless sheet metal screws.

We recently did this with our highlander. I had the installer cut back some of the trim and install it on the side to keep the ground clearance.

They used a mounting bracket similar to this: https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...yABEgJjx_D_BwE
