Hinge for bunk

I don't have the hinges that attach to the bunk for my scamp. Do I have to order them, or can I make do with something from the local box store?

The upper bunk base in both our Ventura and Trillium used what my menfolk call piano hinge. They use it for hingeing things that have to be safe and strong - from the local lumber yard.

Figures, the only picture missing on the new Scamp website is the one for the bunk.. it's called a Chest Hinge. Since Scamp doesn't manufacture the hinge, I'm thinking you can get it just about anywhere this type of hardware is sold.

In the case of my Scamp and the hinge, it's not a piano hinge. I don't have a picture and am lousy at describing something. Sorry.

I found a picture!

i would go with something heavy duty. since its a bunk bed.

the piano hinges i've seen so far where pretty flimsy.

just go to a good hardware store you should find something.

When the couch is conveyed to the bunk bed configuration, is the rear part of the top bunk resting on and supported by the ledge or is it supported by the hinge itself?

In a Trillium the bunk rests on the piano hinge which is screwed into the plywood window frame.

Checked with my hubby and he repeated - it is known locally as piano hinge. It comes in a variety of widths and weights so you need to choose something that will be strong enough.

You should be able to find a Piano hinge in many different sizes and strengths at any real hardware store.
Lowes and H.D. even sell SS ones that should be plenty strong enough for the bunk.

They also sell the hinge shown in the Scamp pic in the cabinet hardware section in little bins in both stores.
If you are in a bigger city they also will be found at a Rockler or Woodcraft store if there is one?

Do not confuse the needs of a Trillium or Scamp or some other brand for bunk supports. There's a reason each use some thing different. For instance, as Dave mentioned
Quote:
In a Trillium the bunk rests on the piano hinge which is screwed into the plywood window frame.
the Scamp bunk is screwed to the bottom of the piece that is fiberglassed to the front wall of the trailer, NOT the window frame. So, the type of hinge is different based on how it works when it's NOT in bunk bed mode, but gaucho mode.

Hence, the hinge is NOT a piano hinge for a Scamp, but a chest hinge like the image I posted and the picture Roy posted.

I am with Donna on this one for sure. Although there may be a way to use a different hinge than the factory I was just saying that many more hinges are available in a Hardware store than you will find in the 1st place you see hinges there.

For some reason I can think of 3 different places I get hinges all the time in the same store?

Ended up using a piano hinge. Also made a rail for the top bunk:
