Honda 2000i Running an Air Conditioner

This has probably been beat to death already. I just purchased a 2015 17' Liberty Delux Casita. Not sure what the BTU rating is on the a/c. I am guessing around 13.5k. Will one Honda run it? I had an 1999 Airstream a few years ago that had a 11.5k and it was marginal. Just wondering if the later model a/c technology has improved and if one little Honda will run it? I have two if needed but would rather not have to tote both of them on trips. I have not tried it out as one my Hondas is in the shop and the other is loaned out for a couple of weeks. Thanks

I'm betting you will need both.

One Honda 2000 won't run the 13,500 BTU air conditioner.

I would say it depends on the BTU rating and the set-up of the A/C. An EU2000i will run the A/C on my Escape. It is a Dometic Penguin 11,000 BTU unit controlled by a digital thermostat, and the compressor has a hard start capacitor. When the thermostat determined cooling is necessary, the A/C's fan comes on, then a few seconds later, the compressor starts. It would not run the A/C on my Scamp, a 13,500 BTU Coleman.

I doubt you have a 13.5 AC unit, check your paperwork or call Casita to find out what size they installed in your '15. My '06 SD has a 9200 btu roof unit and my Honda 2000 only goes to half rpm when the AC cycles on and runs for a little over 8 hours running the AC on a full tank of gas. Can I say cool..........

I may be wrong but I do not think the BTU (British thermal unit) rating on the unit has anything to do with the Wattage needed to run it.
Check unit and see how many watts it takes to run.
I would almost bet the 2000 will be under sized when the compressor kicks in on the AC

Generally speaking, the greater the cooling capacity in BTUs, the more wattage required to an A/C. However, efficiency does come into play. A highly efficient 5,000 BTU unit may require fewer watts than a less efficient unit. And if you view my previous post, you have already lost you your bet. My Honda EU2000i runs my 11,000 BTU Dometic A/C with power to spare.

I had a Dometic 11,000 on Airstream and one Honda 2000i would run it but was marginal. Usually worked best if I helped it out by running the refrain on gas instead of electric. And of course at higher altitudes the little work horse would lose some power but most of the time at higher altitude we didn't need the a/c. When I get my gens. back, I will play with them and see how they act. Don't know what the factory a/c rating is on the 17' Casita but suspect it is a 13.5k and will draw more on start up than one Honda can handle. I think the 11k would be a great size for the Casita as small as the are. The 11k on the Airstream was very iffy trying to cool it on days approaching 100+ degrees.

Honda EU2000i WILL run a 13.5K BTU AC - but needs help!

Dick;
As you said, this subject has been discussed MUCHLY!
The solution is to install a Micro-Air board in the AC. Read the following threads:
<http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f95/soft-start-device-for-ac-units-not-a-capacitor-76833.html>
If you order before Spring and use the word Casita in your order they will give you a discount.
I installed the EasyStart #366 board only and already had a capacitor and paid about $132, after a rebate.
The EastStart #364 would be easier to install, but neither is a real difficult project, as the diagrams are very clear.
Works quietly and no big clunk when the compressor cuts in.
No affiliation with Micro Air.

Friend of mine blew up his Honda 2000i because his wife used a hair dryer, rated for 3500 watt,
Also consider... your AC is running fine... Elect. pump turns on...heater turns on...you want some toast... and you want to read while the Coffee is dripping....
just a thought.

The guts of any such hair dryer must be a water heater element! My wife tells me that the ones they use in hair salons typically are 2000 watts or less.
Not sure how exceeding the capacity of the Honda 2000 would "blow it up." They have overload protection if the user grossly exceeds its output rating.

It should have gone into overload mode and kicked it back to idle until it was reset.

Yamaha makes, or used to make, a quiet 2400W generator that is supposed to handle the 13,500 BTU A/Cs. They are considered reliable like the Hondas. Not much extra money, but unfortunately about 50% more weight to move around.

Exactly! Mine only did it once, when I tried to see if it would run a 13,500 Coleman A/C.

I guess blew up was a strong word maybe I should have said burnt out. All I know is it cost hi, $600 to get it fixed at a Honda dealer.

LOL... I was joking, too, of course. Carl's wife is correct- hair dryers max out at 2000 watts or less. Some have a model number that says 3500, but that's not the wattage- pure marketing hype- like this one, which states in the product description, "The Solano Supersolano 3500 Lite is a 1800 watt professional hair dryer that is both lightweight and powerful..."

I suspect that whatever caused the Honda generator to fail was not the hair dryer itself, but something else triggered by the high demand. Don't blame the woman!

Still, an 1800-2000 watt hair dryer is marginal to try to run off a 2000 watt generator. If you must have a hair dryer, better to leave the high powered one at home and take a low powered one camping. I could see the big one tripping a breaker in a campground bathroom, too.

Too bad you couldn't get your wife to make do and hold her head in front of a 1500 watt cube heater for hair drying. One less appliance to pack!
