Hunter Compact Serial Numbers

Production information on orphan trailers is scarce.

If you own a Hunter Compact Jr., a Hunter Compact II, or a Hunter I, would you be willing to share the year, model, and serial number of your unit? You could post it or send me a Personal Message. I'm interested in the dates of manufacture of these three versions.

In addition to the certificate of title, the Hunters have manufacturer's plates riveted to the fiberglass. I believe the plate for the Jr. is located at the left rear of the camper beside the door. On the other models it is attached to the right front.

I have a Compact II titled as a 1973 and its manufacturer's plate bears serial #1583 and month/date of "10-73." I also have a Compact II titled as a 1974 with serial #1602 and month/date of "8.73."

I suspect the Hunter Compact Jr. was no longer built after the Compact II began production. I think the Compact II and the Hunter I were produced simultaneously, and the latter, only as a 1974 model.

Brian, I think you are on a noble quest. One that I also followed, but for Trilliums:

Hunter Compact VIN

We have Hunter Compact Junior. The Idaho title shows a VIN #1212, the year of 1973, and Model TL . Unfortunately, the plate was lost before we bought it. Good luck with your search.

Dail, that is the lowest serial number, (0089) I have ever come across in my studies.

Here is a picture of another early Compact Jr. with the same "Approval Number" of 7514. I wonder what that means.

I have no idea what the 7514 means. It's also stamped on the trailer tongue.

Interesting. Here is the plate from my ‘73 Compact II. It doesn’t have an Approval Number.

John, thank you for sharing your serial number and that picture. Your camper is beautifully restored. I’ve noticed that some serial numbers are preceded by letter “s” and some not. In my case, my certificate of title has the “s” but the manufacturer’s plate doesn’t. That fact gave my tag agent pause (because of slight dissimilarity) but she transferred title to me anyway.

Here is a photograph showing two separate metal plates on a 1971 Compact Jr. The top one is partly covered by the bottom one. The top one is difficult to read but it’s interesting because it has letter “s” before the serial number. The bottom plate doesn’t have the “s.”

Evidently, the top plate is a California Insignia of Approval. According to https://hcd.ca.gov//manufactured-and...ehome-insignia California began, in 1958, requiring that an insignia of approval be issued to mobile units indicating compliance with construction standards. Next to the photograph is the sample Insignia of Approval from the referenced website.

It looks like the manufacturer stamps the serial number in the block that is pre-marked “s” on the California Insignia of Approval. Perhaps a tag registration agent could mistake the “s” as part of the serial number and include the letter on the title.

Ryan, that is the first manufacturer's plate I've seen that has letter "c" preceding the number. Interesting. I wonder whether the certificate of title also has the "c".

I believe the number on the trailer tongue identifies the manufacturer of the frame and not the camper. The number on this tongue-mounted plate is different from the serial number on the manufacturer's plate riveted to the fiberglass and the VIN on the certificate of title.
