Add a dorm fridge

Our first trailer was a 25 year old Sunline. The Fridge failed almost immediately. We replaced it with a Dorm fridge. It worked great. Some 10 years later, no longer in that rig is still working. It was easy to do and not expensive.

If you want to go off grid empty the vegetable bin and put in dry ice.

We made it even more efficient and added 1 " foam on 4 sides.

WE did add an O ring to the door to prevent it from opening on the road.

I have an icebox also. I was thinking of doing an experiment to see how long it stays cold with a bag of ice, before i decide on swapping it out.

@nitknit we have a 2006 Scamp 16 with the Dometic fridge that runs on gas or electric (120v). Most our trips are only a few days and to power the fridge doesn’t make sense for us. For those shorter trips we use a Yeti cooler which with regular ice (one bag) has done us good for about 5 days with being very conservative on how we open it and how long. That said: for longer trips we’ve kept the propane on for the fridge and it’s worked. While my reply doesn’t answer which one to do I hope it gives a few scenarios to consider. Also to consider: which of the different options is going to suit your needs better and make your overall experience better?

I owned a 1978 Scamp with ice box. Ice supply every three days was an extra chore on long camps. I found a new 3-Way Dometic after market refrig at Camp World for quick sale for $350 and bargained it down to $300. I had Scamp install it in ~1990 for under $200. I built a 4 sided box of blue foam board for extra insulation - so Scamp could slide the Dometic right in. They cut lower and upper body holes, installed bottom access door, top vent, gas line supply, 120v and 12v electric supply. The Dometic refrig has run great for past thirty years.

Keeping food and drink cold

My 1980 Trillium 13 came with no fridge as it was taken out, so going over lots of options/cost/dry vs plugged in camping, here is my solution.

Walmart "Yeti" Type cooler
One for food
Coleman Oldie
For Drinks and Fruit, opening many times per day
$100

Walmart Chinese mini fridge Galanz
$65

Home Depot
3/4" foam insulation
$15

see second photo, foam cut and installed three sides, locking in fridge in opening and providing more insulation. NOTE Clearance at back for the "dorm fridge" heat to escape.

Duracell 1100 power station
Pep Boys
$169

Can dry camp for three days,
then a campground to plug in for the night
use the Galanz fridge, which does take time to get to 40 degrees
Stop and get some more ice
then either stay or go back to the woods.

Refer to the information here: https://vogeltalksrving.com/icebox-o...tor/#more-1218 before making a decision. I think it will help you more.
