If you are not home, your insurance policy probably requires somebody to check on the house every three or four days. If a water pipe springs a leak, the insurance company will pay for replacing drywall in the basement, but not likely pay if your house floats away because nobody was looking in.

I had called Amica about the house being empty, they have no rules about someone checking the house every so often. It is certainly worth checking with your insurer.

We have a house checker relative, a State Police officer as a neighbor, and an alarm system that also senses low temperature, water on the floor, and no power. The mailbox opening gets blocked with a "do not deliver" note.

In our city, you can fill out a form at the police dept. asking them to check on your house while you are out of town.

I don't think the cops driving past your house would carry any weight with the insurance company. They want somebody to enter the home and look around. Cops would not notice a leaking water main, for instance. I use that example because my wife asked me if I heard running water. Had four inches of water in the crawl space.
